"It was quite a long walk from both sides of the sulphur vallies, with parts in the dense jungle where U can easily get lost (we didn't) and also a car road. The place was well hidden inside the forest because it needs to cool down from the 80° lake up there. Coming down there was a small waterfall which is avl great place to take photos"

Superuser Li

"This footpath is such a lovely little treat after walking around the area for a while. The water is just the right temperature to relax your feet, and there’s a small platou where you can sit. It can get a bit crowded at times, but chances are you’ll still be able to find a spot. A simple but really nice way to take a break."

Anne Lysa

"Really nice place to relax after a walk. Lots of places to sit, just bring a towel and soak those feet. There are lots of bugs around so if that sort of thing bothers you, sit carefully. Even saw a big spider, so just be aware. Very fun and absolutely would go back."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Volcanic Heart of Noboribetsu

Noboribetsu is renowned for its intense geothermal activity, and Oyunuma River is a direct result of this. The area sits atop a volcanic crater, with hot springs and fumaroles releasing steam and sulfurous gases. The Oyunuma Pond is a crater lake, its waters heated to extreme temperatures by the volcanic activity below. This superheated water then flows down to create the Oyunuma River Natural Footbath, where it cools to a comfortable temperature for visitors to enjoy. The mineral-rich composition of the water, a byproduct of the volcanic earth, is believed to have therapeutic properties for the skin. Instagram+1

This geothermal landscape creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere. The steam rising from the ground, the distinct smell of sulfur, and the vibrant, mineral-stained earth are characteristic of the region. While the pond itself is too hot to touch, the outflow provides a unique opportunity to experience the earth's warmth directly. It’s a powerful reminder of the dynamic geological forces at play beneath the surface of Hokkaido. Instagram

Visitors often describe the walk to the footbath as a journey through a natural wonderland. The surrounding forests and the gentle flow of the river add to the tranquility, offering a stark contrast to the more dramatic volcanic sights of Hell Valley. It’s this blend of raw natural power and serene relaxation that makes Oyunuma River a must-visit.

Experiencing the Natural Footbath

The Oyunuma River Natural Footbath is a simple yet profoundly relaxing experience. After a short, pleasant hike, you'll find a wooden platform and seating areas alongside the gently flowing river. The water, naturally heated by the volcanic springs, is the perfect temperature for soaking tired feet. Many visitors find the volcanic sand at the bottom of the bath to be particularly soothing and beneficial for the skin. Reddit

It's important to note that while the footbath is wonderfully warm, the main Oyunuma Pond upstream is extremely hot and should not be entered. The footbath is specifically designed as a safe place to enjoy the thermal waters. Bringing a small towel is highly recommended for drying off afterward, as there are no changing facilities. InstagramReddit

While the experience is free and accessible, the popularity of the spot means it can get busy. For a more tranquil visit, aim for weekdays or early mornings. The surrounding natural beauty, with trees and the sound of flowing water, enhances the overall sense of peace and rejuvenation. It's a perfect way to unwind after exploring the more intense geothermal areas of Noboribetsu. Instagram+1
