However, attendees must be prepared for extreme cold and large crowds, with early booking of accommodation being crucial for prime viewing access.

"Amazing experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to visit Japan.
Make sure you bring your warmest/most waterproof clothing as you will be standing still in sub zero temperatures for a very long time.

I would also recommend getting there early if you want to be able to actually see what's going on. As the area fills up pretty quickly once things get started and getting a clear view of the shrine and proceedings can be difficult with the amount of people present."

"A truly remarkable experience. We watched the initial lighting in the town square and followed it all the way to the main stage. A sensory overload as the fire, snow and wind all played their part as the locals sang songs and drank alcohol from wooden cups. I would highly recommend this Matsuri event if you get the chance."

"IMPORTANT

If you want to visit the ceremony and see it up close you MUST stay at the Nozawaonsen accommodation as only then you can get a ticket to get into the area where the ceremony will happen.

Granted, even if you did not get a ticket (and accommodation) you can still stand outside and view the ceremony from afar (the parking lot is one of the spots to do that). After the temple is lit, they let people to get close to it and see it from up close (as allowed safely)."
