Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Odawara Art Foundation for its unique 'observatory' concept, blending art, architecture, and stunning natural scenery. The thoughtful design by Hiroshi Sugimoto and the serene coastal views are consistently highlighted as exceptional. Some find the three-hour session too short to fully absorb the experience.

"This place is tucked away in the countryside about 1.5hrs drive from Tokyo. It's best to book in advance for admission and free shuttle bus or parking permit, 3300 yen each person. It's closed at 4:30pm and the access to the bamboo forest is closed at 4pm. Some very exquisite architecture details, as well as spaces (Mies and Philip Johnson glass house vibe), displaying works by the designer/photographer himself. It's quite a little gem esp. if you can manage to visit during a cooler day."

"Amazing art experience! Only wish i could have stayed longer as the session is only 3 hours and I go slowly. Brings art and architecture together dexigned by hiroshi sugimoto. Elements of japanese garden throughout and one of my favourite art places - reminded me of naoshima and chichu.

There are 3 shuttle bus for each entry from the closest JR station and make sure you book online 2 days in advance to get the discount. I was not so organised and called up on the day for walk up ticket which was 3850 yen but very easy.

The cafe is also great i enjoyed the orange gelato with amazing Views"

Connie

"It is difficult to categorize this facility with anything. The facility itself is art, the location is art, the ancient Japanese artifacts are art, and the fusion of these elements makes for a special experience. The cherry blossoms and rape blossoms were in full bloom, creating an Amazing landscape. The three hours are in the morning and afternoon, but the three hours go by quickly. Reservations are required through the website."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Vision of Hiroshi Sugimoto

The Odawara Art Foundation's Enoura Observatory is a testament to the artistic vision of Hiroshi Sugimoto, a world-renowned contemporary artist and photographer. Sugimoto designed the entire complex, integrating his artistic philosophy into every aspect, from the architecture to the landscape. He envisioned the observatory not just as a gallery, but as a space where art, architecture, and nature converge to create a profound experience for visitors. Instagram+1

Sugimoto's work often explores themes of time, memory, and the ephemeral nature of existence. At Enoura, this is evident in the way he frames views of Sagami Bay, the use of natural light, and the juxtaposition of ancient artifacts with modern structures. The observatory itself is considered a work of art, designed to engage visitors in a contemplative journey. InstagramReddit

Visitors often remark on the 'genius' and 'talent' displayed in Sugimoto's creation, noting how the subtle movements of nature are framed to offer a unique perspective on beauty and the fundamental elements of experience. It's a place that encourages reflection and a deeper appreciation for the interplay between human creation and the natural world. Reddit

Architecture and Landscape Harmony

The architecture of the Enoura Observatory is a striking blend of modern design and traditional Japanese aesthetics. Sugimoto incorporated elements that evoke a sense of timelessness, with clean lines and a minimalist approach that allows the surrounding natural beauty to take center stage. The 100-meter gallery, for instance, offers a long, contemplative space with expansive views. Instagram+1

The landscape design is equally crucial to the observatory's appeal. Perched above Sagami Bay, the site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean. The integration of Japanese garden principles ensures that the natural surroundings are not just a backdrop but an integral part of the artistic experience. Seasonal changes, such as the blooming of cherry blossoms or mikan trees, further enhance the site's beauty. InstagramReddit

Visitors often draw parallels to other renowned art sites like Naoshima, appreciating the thoughtful curation of space and the seamless fusion of built environment with the natural world. The restored Muromachi-period gate, relocated from the Nezu Museum, adds a significant historical dimension, bridging the past and the present within this unique artistic landscape. Reddit
