What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bar Freedom is overwhelmingly praised for its exceptional Japanese whisky selection and the owner Tony's unparalleled expertise. Visitors rave about the personalized tasting flights and the intimate, conversational atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome. While the snug setting means arriving early is advised, the unique experience and educational insights make it a must-visit.
"Unforgettable and unique experience for all whiskey lovers. Regardless of whether you are relatively new to whiskey, prefer those with higher alcohol content (?!?), favour more specific flavour profiles or even a non-drinker*, Tony can curate something based on the description of what you like and palate. You can enjoy a flight or taste single bottles from over 200 Japanese whiskies hidden in the stylish and surprisingly spacious bar behind him.
* For guests who do not drink, Tony has some grape juice for inclusiveness.
Tony was a veritable encyclopedia for these whiskies, including their histories, tasting profiles and distillery locations (i.e. displayed on a charming printed map), including which ones to visit. My partner and I tried 13 types of Japanese whiskey in total, most of which we’d never heard of before*. We thoroughly enjoyed each one, although some more than others. Some only had a few hundred bottles so we were a little worried about the price, but it wasn’t too scary in the end 😅.
*Happily, we managed to purchase a bottle of the Kanosuke at the Narita duty-free.
Good conversations with other customers from various countries. Place is rather cosy so best to have dinner early to ensure you get a seat at the bar. Check the updates tab on Google maps to avoid disappointment as it's not always open.
Not a main selling point but worth mentioning. One of only 2 places we encountered in Japan (so far) with 2-ply toilet paper 🧻🧻."

"Tony (if I remember his name correctly) is very knowledgeable on his Japanese whiskies! Did two flights, one peaty and one not peaty and he shared a lot of interesting information comparing these Japanese whiskies to their Scottish counterparts. And for those a bit worried about a language barrier, no worries, Tony speaks fluent English (Canadian if I remember right), Mandarin (Taiwanese heritage) and also Japanese too.
Highly recommended to visit if you are in Osaka and looking for to expand your Japanese whiskey knowledge!"

"Tony is the Ollivander’s of Japanese whiskey, but instead of giving you the perfect wand, he finds you the perfect whiskey to suit your tastes.
This is bar is my absolute go to when I’m in Osaka. Not only because of the premium whiskey, but because Tony is an expert experience curator.
I’ve gone back to his bar 3 times and my most recent experience I brought my friend who wasn’t a whiskey drinker (actually she outright said “I hate whiskey” lol ). After 3 choices carefully selected by Tony, she left there a believer in Japanese whiskey!
Tony is a true master of his craft and I highly highly recommend trying his omakase whiskey experience at least once. You are guaranteed to get a history lesson, the knowledge of how Japanese whiskey is processed, and at least one restaurant recommendation.
Thank you for the conversation, laughs, and memories Tony. See you soon!!!"
