Reviews Summary

Kanazawa is praised for its beautiful gardens, well-preserved historic districts, and excellent seafood. Visitors appreciate the blend of traditional culture and modern amenities. However, some find the sushi to be average in quality for the price, and popular spots can have long wait times.

"Found the food to be about average, maybe slightly above, and prices were a bit high. It was enjoyable, but hardly remarkable. Fish was if good enough quality but rice flavor was lacking slightly. Felt it was missing some of the richness that is sushi rice. Stuff on the belt was at least mostly fresh, so you weren't forced to just order every item. You won't be disappointed, but you won't be blown away either. Great view when waiting though"

Grant Ellis

"Kaiten Sushi spot located on the 10th floor of the Umeda North building. Arrived on a Wednesday night around 9pm and the restaurant was busy. Took a number and waited about 30mins to get seats at the counter. Staff was welcoming and the waitress who seated explained the ordering process in English.

Even though it's Kaiten Sushi, the belt was oddly bare (probably due to the time of day?). Despite that, we just simply ordered what we wanted from the tablets which is preferable anyways. Don't expect high-end levels of Sushi making here, but what do get is definitely a step-up from the bigger Kaiten Sushi chains. The pricing is very reasonable."

Kevin H

"Not a very good Sushi bar worthing to get 4 stars or above. Sushi was just average in terms of freshness. Varities were also limited.

However decoration is nice and dinning environment is comfortable. CP value is also average. A Sushi bar with no surprises. That is the reason for less people to line up."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring Kanazawa's Historic Districts

Kanazawa boasts exceptionally well-preserved historic districts that offer a tangible connection to Japan's past. The Higashi Chaya District is one of the most famous, a beautifully maintained area where geisha once entertained. Wandering its narrow streets, you'll find traditional wooden teahouses, some of which are open to the public as museums or shops selling local crafts and sweets. The atmosphere here is particularly enchanting in the early morning or late afternoon, when the crowds thin out and the lanterns begin to glow. Instagram

Adjacent to Higashi Chaya is the Nagamachi Samurai District, which transports you back to the Edo period. Here, you can explore the former residences of samurai and their families, offering a glimpse into their daily lives and architectural styles. The Nomura-ke Samurai House is a standout, featuring a beautiful garden and preserved interiors. Walking through these districts feels like stepping onto a movie set, with every corner offering a new visual delight. Instagram

These districts are best explored on foot, allowing you to soak in the ambiance and discover hidden alleys. Wear comfortable shoes, as the cobblestone streets can be uneven. Many visitors find that dedicating a full day to exploring these areas, perhaps with a stop at a traditional cafe, provides the most immersive experience. TikTok

Kanazawa's Culinary Scene: Beyond Sushi

While Kanazawa is celebrated for its exceptional seafood, particularly at the bustling Omicho Market, its culinary offerings extend far beyond sushi. The market itself is a sensory delight, brimming with fresh catches, local produce, and street food vendors. Here, you can sample everything from grilled seafood skewers to kaisendon (seafood rice bowls), offering a true taste of the region's bounty. TikTok

Beyond the market, Kanazawa is also known for its Kaga cuisine, a refined style of cooking that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and delicate flavors. This often includes dishes featuring local vegetables, tofu, and freshwater fish. For those with a sweet tooth, Kanazawa is also famous for its gold leaf products, which are often incorporated into desserts like ice cream, adding a touch of luxury and visual appeal. TikTok

When dining, don't hesitate to try local sake, which is produced in the Ishikawa prefecture. Many restaurants offer tasting menus or recommendations that showcase the best of Kanazawa's gastronomic landscape. Even if you're not a seafood enthusiast, the city's diverse food scene has something to offer every palate. TikTok

The Art of Kenrokuen Garden

Kenrokuen Garden is consistently ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens, and for good reason. It's a masterpiece of design, meticulously crafted over centuries to embody the six attributes of a perfect garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water, and spaciousness. Each element is thoughtfully placed to create a harmonious and ever-changing vista. TikTok

Visitors can spend hours wandering through its winding paths, discovering tranquil ponds, charming teahouses, and ancient trees. The garden's beauty transforms with the seasons, from the delicate cherry blossoms of spring and lush greenery of summer to the fiery hues of autumn and the serene snow-covered landscapes of winter. The Kotoji-tōrō (a stone lantern with two legs) is one of its most iconic features and a popular spot for photos. Instagram

Adjacent to Kenrokuen is Kanazawa Castle Park, which offers a different historical perspective. While the castle itself has been reconstructed, the surrounding park and its impressive stone walls and moats provide a sense of scale and grandeur. Together, Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle Park form a significant cultural and historical hub within Kanazawa City. TikTok
