Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan for its affordable entry fee, offering a peaceful escape with historical charm and scenic views, especially if Mt. Fuji is visible. The unique attic viewpoint and the fun fish-feeding activity are frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects.

"This small open-air museum preserves a traditional thatched farmhouse from the Edo period. The building, with its thick kayabuki roof and wooden beams darkened by age, houses an impressive collection of everyday tools, pottery, textiles, and homeware — including a central irori hearth with a suspended iron fish hook.

What makes this house stand out is the rare chance to climb all the way to the attic under the roof. The uppermost level, now partly glazed for visitors, reveals the intricate wooden structure and offers a quiet, atmospheric view over the surroundings. While this glass section was likely added during the museum’s restoration, it allows visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship and geometry of the original roof from within."

"Well worth the visit with only 300 yen per adult - you are away from the crowd and in this secluded area with scenic views (although we visited on a cloudy day, so sadly didn't get to see Mt Fuji). There is also a Japanese cottage here that you get to see the setting of a traditional Japanese house. You can also buy fish food for 100 yen / bag to feed the fish - kids would love this."

C L

"Great views of Mount Fuji. Scenic and make sure to buy the fish food."
