Limited time in Omiya, Saitama just outside Tokyo, any recommendations nearby?
Hello everyone, I am in Japan for a congress starting today, and finishing the 22nd. Due to a tight schedule I have limited time to get around and see/do stuff. Went to Tokyo last summer and caught the main sights, so my question is if anybody has recommendations for things to…

What are some interesting places to visit in Saitama/Saitama-shi?
Hi! I've been to a lot of the major touristy places in Saitama--like Hikawa Shrine and Omiya Park, but I wanted to know if there was anything interesting to see that's fairly close. I read something about Tsuki Shrine (some shrine dedicated to rabbits), but I can't really…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Omiya Park Zoo is praised as a surprisingly good, free-admission attraction, offering a pleasant experience with informative animal displays and close encounters, particularly with birds and small mammals. However, some visitors express concern over the small size of enclosures and potential signs of animal stress, alongside observations of cleanliness issues and a lack of visible staff.
"Please don't go, this is extreme cruelty! All animals look in a terrible state and extremely stressed. Most of them display repetitive behavior, trying to find ways to escape their cells. Look at the bear and Hyena videos and you will understand what I mean. Animals that are meant to roam freely and in different environments to here are forced to withstand conditions they would never face in their natural habitat. Have been crying and feeling completely depressed during all the visit.
Most worrysome might be everyone else is enjoying the Zoo, completely unbothered by the cruelty in front of their eyes.
Beyond all of this, cells are dirty, and there doesn't seem to be an attempt to mimic their natural habitat. Most of the cells have concrete floors and are dirty with pee and feces. Absolutely heartbreaking."

"Surprisingly good for a free-admission zoo. This is a hidden gem in the park 🦊! Definitely recommended to visit."

"I was a bit sad I didn't get to see the tanuki, but I did get to see the anakuma badger. We enjoyed this little zoo. It rained during my visit, so some of the animals hid.
Each enclosure had photos of and names for each animal as well as a little information about them.
We enjoyed being able to walk through and see everything without having a huge crowd around. I especially liked the hyena and the javalina/peccaries.
Funny enough, peccaries, also called javalina are native to my home state, Colorado, but I have never seen one before. Seeing a whole herd of them living happily there was really cool.
Most of the birds were sequestered for breeding season, but the local wild birds made up for it by hanging around the park."

📸 📸 Photography
The flamingo enclosure is a prime spot for vibrant photos. The peccary herd and the anakuma badger also offer good opportunities. The Asian black bear and hyena enclosures can be challenging due to their size and potential for shadows.
Early mornings or late afternoons, often referred to as the 'golden hours,' provide softer, more flattering light. This can help reduce harsh shadows and make the animals' colors pop.
Generally, casual photography for personal use is allowed. However, professional photography or the use of flash might be restricted in certain areas or for specific animals to avoid disturbing them. Always be respectful.
Use a faster shutter speed to freeze animal movement. If lighting is low, consider increasing your ISO or using a wider aperture. A zoom lens can be very useful for capturing animals without getting too close.
Try to shoot at an angle that minimizes reflections from glass or bars. If shooting through bars, try to focus on the animal and keep the bars slightly out of focus. Patience is key!
