Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Sashimaki Wetlands for its easy accessibility and the unique spectacle of abundant skunk cabbage blooms, especially for those who can't hike long distances. However, the boardwalk's condition, including its narrowness and slipperiness, is a recurring concern, making it less ideal for those with mobility issues. The lack of facilities is also noted.

"Visited 10/Apr/2025: not many of them were blooming.. but can be a good stop over in this route. It's free; just do some donate on parking at a coin box."

Antonio Oattono

"This is a colony of skunk cabbage, located right next to National Route 46.
In Oze, you have to walk for hours to see them, but here, it's a perfect access environment with zero walking time. If you have weak legs, you can see them from the car. You can also see Zazen grass and Kikuzaki Ichika flowers.
You can also catch a glimpse of the remaining snow on Mt. Akita Komagatake between the trees."

"It only takes 10 minutes to get from Tianze Lake. There is a parking lot at the entrance that can park about 20 cars. It should be fully open on 4/24. There are not many people. It is a quiet and comfortable wetland where water plantains grow. There are small purple flowers growing in clusters in the back section (I don’t know) You know what kind of flower it is), the overall area is quite large, and it takes about 20 minutes to complete the walk (if you don’t take a bunch of photos deliberately), the boardwalk continues to need repairs. If you think this place is good, you can consider donating some repair funds. It is highly recommended to come and have a look during the cherry blossom season. (The cherry blossoms at Kakunodate and Kitakami Exhibition Center are in full bloom on April 24)"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Appeal of Skunk Cabbage

Sashimaki Wetlands is renowned for its impressive colony of skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus). This fascinating plant is known for its unusual spathe, which often emits a foul odor to attract pollinators like flies and beetles. The bloom typically occurs in early spring, pushing through the snow or damp earth. Visiting Sashimaki Wetlands offers a unique opportunity to see these plants in abundance without the extensive hiking often required in other locations. Reddit

While the smell might be off-putting to some, the visual spectacle of the skunk cabbage, often accompanied by other spring wildflowers like Zazen grass and Kikuzaki Ichika, makes it a worthwhile stop. The accessibility of the wetlands means even those with limited mobility can appreciate this natural phenomenon. Reddit

Pro-tip: The 'Akita Flower Journey' website provides real-time updates on the skunk cabbage bloom, so checking this before your visit can help you catch them at their peak. Reddit

Navigating the Boardwalk and Accessibility

The primary way to explore Sashimaki Wetlands is via its boardwalk. However, visitors should be aware that the boardwalk is not always in pristine condition. Reviews mention that it can be narrow, uneven, and particularly slippery when wet, especially after rain. While some sections have undergone repairs, it's crucial to wear appropriate footwear with good grip. Reddit

For those with mobility challenges, including wheelchair users, navigating the boardwalk can be difficult. The entrance may involve stairs, and the path itself is not consistently wide or smooth. While there are wider areas in places, it's not considered fully accessible. Visitors with pets will find it manageable, but should ensure their animals are leashed. Reddit

Recommendation: Sturdy, non-slip, and ideally waterproof shoes are highly recommended. If you have concerns about footing, consider visiting on a dry day or being extra cautious. The donation box at the parking lot is for supporting these much-needed repairs. Reddit

Beyond the Blooms: Scenic Views and Flora

While the skunk cabbage is the main draw, Sashimaki Wetlands offers more to appreciate. The location provides opportunities to spot other native flora, including Zazen grass and Kikuzaki Ichika flowers, which add delicate pops of color to the landscape. Reddit

Adding to the scenic beauty, on clear days, visitors can catch glimpses of the snow-capped Mt. Akita Komagatake peeking through the trees. This provides a picturesque backdrop to the wetland environment, offering a broader sense of the natural beauty of the region. Reddit
