Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Sendai Mediatheque's stunning and unique architecture, calling it a masterpiece by Toyo Ito. The 'tube structures' and transparent design are consistently highlighted as major draws. While entry is free, some find it unsuitable for working due to a lack of power outlets.

"An architect by Toyoo Ito, born in Seoul, South Korea in 1941.
This is a representative example of a building that blends in with its surroundings.

Starting in the 1990s, he gradually moved toward a style that was more experimental in structure, with sensual exterior and interior spaces, most notably the "Sendai Mediatheque.""

Platinum Guide

"We are glad we took the time to visit this building. We were able to visit Level 7, 5 and 1. Level 7, were studio rooms, but we saw pictures of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami on the building and Sendai. Very educational. We saw photo galleries in Level 5. The photos were from local artists and were worthy of a visit. Level 1 was also an interesting decoration. We learned about the architect and interior designs for every floor. It is the most interesting building to visit."

Susan Lam

"Sendai Mediatheque is located right next to Jozenji-dori. It is a versatile building that serves as both a public library and an exhibition space.

When I passed through Jozenji-dori, the unique architecture design of this building attracted my attention. From the outside, it appears as a massive glass box with intriguing, unconventional structures within. But step inside, and you’ll realize that these structures are actually elevators. It’s a clever blend of form and function.

While it is free to enter, during your exploration, please remember that many visitors are quietly immersed in their reading or study sessions. Please keep the noise level down and respect their peaceful experience."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architectural Vision of Toyo Ito

The Sendai Mediatheque is a seminal work by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito. Completed in 2001, it represents a significant departure from traditional library design, embracing a fluid and experimental approach. Ito's concept was to create a 'living' space that could adapt and evolve, much like a body. TikTokInstagram+1

The most striking feature is the series of 13 'tube structures' that pierce through the building's glass facade. These are not merely decorative; they house essential services like elevators, stairs, and mechanical systems, while also acting as the primary structural support. This innovative design blurs the lines between architecture, infrastructure, and art, creating a visually dynamic and open interior. Instagram+1

Ito's work often explores the relationship between the digital and the physical, and the Mediatheque embodies this by creating a transparent and interconnected environment. The building's transparency invites the city in, while the internal spaces offer a sense of calm and intellectual exploration. It's a testament to how architecture can foster community and creativity. Instagram+1

A Multifaceted Public Space

More than just a library, the Sendai Mediatheque is a vibrant public facility designed to serve a diverse range of community needs. It seamlessly integrates a public library with art galleries, an event space, a cafe, and even a theater. This multi-purpose approach makes it a dynamic hub for culture and learning. Instagram+2

The library itself offers a vast collection of books and audio-visual materials, providing a quiet sanctuary for readers and researchers. Complementing this are the art galleries, which regularly showcase works by local and international artists, offering visitors a chance to engage with contemporary art. InstagramReddit

Beyond its core functions, the Mediatheque also serves as a venue for various events, workshops, and performances, further cementing its role as a vital cultural center for Sendai. Its accessible design and welcoming atmosphere encourage broad community participation. Instagram+1

The Impact of the 2011 Earthquake

The Sendai Mediatheque bore witness to the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in March 2011. The building, due to its robust design and strategic location, largely withstood the seismic forces. However, the experience left a mark, and an exhibit on Level 7 displays poignant photographs documenting the disaster and its impact on Sendai. Reddit

This exhibit serves as a powerful reminder of the event's scale and offers an educational perspective for visitors. It highlights the resilience of the community and the role the Mediatheque played during and after the crisis. Reddit

Experiencing this exhibit provides a deeper understanding of Sendai's history and the enduring spirit of its people, adding a layer of profound significance to a visit focused on architecture and art. Reddit
