Next stop of my Ramen research trip to Japan this year was at Kasho (華塩) at station Chitose Karasuyama, just 15 minutes by express train from Shinjuku station. This shop opened just last year, so it’s relatively new. They specialize on light Ramen served with soup made with oysters and Niboshi (dried sardines). I am a huge fan of these light, elegant seafood styles so I definitely wanted to give i...

Reviews Summary

Chitose-Karasuyama is appreciated for its improved public safety and strong community ties, retaining a traditional Japanese atmosphere. While some feel it has lost some past elegance, the lively shopping district and convenient access to the city center are definite pluses. The lack of station toilets is a noted inconvenience.

"Thirty years ago, when I was working part-time at a printing company in Shinjuku, a colleague of mine lived in Chitose-Karasuyama. I also lived in Daitabashi, so I sometimes rode my bike along the same line. How are you all doing?"

磯部成志

"I grew up in Chitose-Karasuyama for about 30 years, then moved to another prefecture, then returned, and now I live in a different part of Setagaya Ward.

To be honest, Chitose-Karasuyama used to have a bad reputation for its public safety. Land prices and rent were low, and burglaries and snatch thefts were common. It was sometimes called "Setagaya's Adachi Ward."

But that didn't stop the residents from being very open-minded, making it easy for people from the countryside to settle in, and it was home to a variety of people, from eccentrics to celebrities. Local ties are strong, there's a lot of mutual support, and I think it's a town that retains a traditional Japanese atmosphere.

Recently, public safety has improved, but there are fewer young people living here and the population is aging. However, plans are underway to build a high-rise apartment building in front of the station, so the town's atmosphere will likely change in the future.

I've had a lot of experiences in this town, and I think I'm still able to put them to good use even now that I'm working, as I get transferred around the country for work."

まっつー

"I lived there about 30 years ago, so maybe it's just my nostalgia, but back then it was a very nice, down-to-earth, yet refined town. It seems to have lost some of its elegance now, which is disappointing. Traces of the past remain in Sengawa today."
