Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Shiretoko's breathtaking natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and unique experiences like drift ice cruises. The remote wilderness and dramatic coastlines are consistently praised. However, some find the journey challenging and weather can be unpredictable, leading to cancellations. Reddit

"Beautiful Cape. Watch out for eggs though."

Sliced Bread

"It takes about two hours to reach the island from Utoro Port on the large ship Aurora. However, you cannot land there. Just as the song "Shiretoko Traveler's Feelings" says, Kunashiri Island was visible in the distance. The weather was beautiful, and along the way we were able to see Kamuiwakka Falls and several strangely shaped rock formations. It was mid-July, but the temperature was higher than expected, so we were fine without a jacket. The cape is home to a lighthouse and a vast, flat expanse of land. There are no roads to get there, so you cannot drive. It's a four-hour round trip, so you might not want to come unless you're on a leisurely sightseeing trip, but I recommend visiting at least once. Incidentally, on the return trip, it rained heavily, and we were unable to go out on deck for a while. This was also a great opportunity to experience nature."

Snow Longvil

"You can get to the cape. There's no path, though. Walk along the coast from Aidomari. Along the way, there are two tricky spots, Nembutsu Rock and Kabuto Rock, that require a rope, but I didn't have time, so I avoided the cliffs and swam instead. It's only a few dozen meters, but it's incredibly cold (even in midsummer). I left first thing in the morning and arrived around noon, so I think it's a two-day, one-night trip. However, I did have a close encounter with a bear (we were saved by a dog from the guardhouse), so I think it's not for the average person, and is more suitable for those with some experience. However, there was a group of local elementary and junior high school students there (for a three-day, two-night trip), so it might be doable with careful preparation.

At the very end of the cape, the dog from the guardhouse closest to the cape followed closely behind and gave me a lift. Thank you.

Bears generally ignore humans, but just to be safe, it's a good idea to borrow bear spray and a food container from the Rausu Visitor Center. Food should be kept in containers at least 200 meters away from the ⛺. Once a 🐻 has acquired a taste for human food, it will be subject to euthanasia, so be careful not to steal its food. Feeding a 🐻 is a big no-no. If you do, you will become a prey for the 🐻. Even if you don't, someone else will become a prey for the 🐻.

My report makes it seem like I went and came back quickly, but I have over 30 years of mountaineering experience (including snow, rocks, streams, and undergrowth), and I once scouted the way to Beijing Nose before finally setting off later. Tide monitoring is also important. Recklessness and ignorance will lead directly to disaster. Those without physical strength or skill should never set foot here. This is a place that tests your overall outdoor skills.

Avoid going alone. Also, make sure you have mountaineering insurance and helicopter insurance. I have it.

P.S....2025 (Reiwa 7). A very unfortunate accident has occurred on Mount Rausu in Shiretoko. I pray for the repose of the souls of the climbers who were injured.
The nature and animals of Shiretoko that I knew are now history.
It may be best to refrain from venturing into Shiretoko's wilderness at this time.
If you were to walk to the cape, you would have to hire a local guide and go with a large group. However, in these circumstances, even local guides may not be willing to take on the challenge.
Guides from other regions have caused mass accidents in the Daisetsuzan mountains...
People with local experience are the most trustworthy.
I think local experience is very important."
