Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the unique sight of Furepe Waterfall emerging from cliffs into the sea, often coupled with wildlife sightings like deer and occasional bear encounters. The easy trail and scenic coastal views are frequently praised, though some note the waterfall's flow can be less dramatic than expected. Trail closures due to bears are a common concern but are understood as part of the wild nature of Shiretoko.

"(Trip was in June) After our guided Shiretoko goko lakes tour, we had lunch in a seafood restaurant overlooking the beautiful coast, rested from the mid-day sun for abit then was soooo disappointed to learn that Furepe waterfall trail got closed just a while ago because of bear sighting! We downloaded the live app and checked back regularly to see if the trail would reopen while we hiked the “Deer Fence Course” and “Forest Keeper Trail”. Then from the app, we learned that Furepe trail reopened and we quickly walked over.

Just 10mins into our walk, we came across a bear that popped out suddenly from the left of the path!! 🐻 it took a look at us, turning back to look at us a few more times while it continued on its way towards the shelter at the waterfall viewpoint.

We were so happy, actually, and really thankful that it was a friendly bear because things could have gone really wrong too.

The waterfall was very nice… it was not linked from an obvious river, so it was magical to see the waterfal coming out from the cliff to the sea!

We spotted a small herd of deer too. There wasn’t many people when we were there, the trail to the lighthouse was closed as it was under renovation."

"My family and I as first time foreign tourists in Hokkaido did the trail walk at Shiretoko National Park to see Furepe Waterfall up close. The trail walk itself was quite easy, and the reward at the end was fair. Apart from a close up view of the waterfall from the "Observation Deck" nearby, you also get to see Mount Rausa in a different but also beautiful way."

"The original route behind the visitor center was closed due to bear sightings. 400m from the main route was the other alternative open, and we did encounter a mid size bear walking suddenly right in front of us. It took a look at us and continue its walk. The mother and family must be nearby and freak me out. We continue the walk to the fall and did not encounter any more. Some visitors saw the poo which probably came from the same bear. The fall is not great, so skip it if you have other things to do. Oshin Koshin is more accessible and dramatic. people say tourists look for encounter with bears and locals look for avoidance .."

The Unique Geology of Furepe Waterfall

Unlike many waterfalls fed by rivers or streams, Furepe Waterfall is a unique phenomenon where groundwater emerges directly from the cliff face and cascades into the sea. This creates a distinctive visual spectacle, especially against the backdrop of the rugged Shiretoko coastline. The water source being groundwater means the flow can be less dramatic than a river-fed waterfall, but its origin is what makes it so special. Reddit

The surrounding environment adds to the allure. The trail winds through forests and tall shrubs, offering a pleasant walk with the sounds of nature. The combination of the high cliffs, the mist from the falling water, and the seagulls flying around contributes to a sense of majesty and wild beauty. Reddit

Visitors often describe the experience as magical, with the waterfall appearing almost out of nowhere from the cliff. The observation deck provides a perfect vantage point to appreciate this geological wonder and the surrounding coastal landscape. Reddit
