What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the mystical atmosphere of Kanaya-juku, especially in the late afternoon as the lights come on, offering a unique glimpse into the past. The historical significance of the Old Tokaido road and the remnants of inns like Kashiwaya Honjin are noted points of interest. Some find the lack of remaining original buildings a bit sad, but the overall ambiance is captivating.
"Kanaya-juku on the Old Tokaido
This is the 24th post town from Edo on the Tokaido's 53 Stations. This is where Kashiwaya Honjin (first honjin) was located.
In the early Edo period, Kanaya-juku had 52 inns, including Kashiwaya and Sazukaya, the main inns, Yamadaya, the side inn, and 52 lodgings. While Fujieda had only 37 inns, the smaller Kanaya had only 52, likely due to the river's closure. A major fire in 1791 destroyed all 52 inns, including two honjin, one side inn, and two other inns. Ten years later, the town was rebuilt (with three honjin and no side inns) thanks to a loan from the shogunate. However, Kashiwaya collapsed in the 1854 Tokai earthquake, and it closed its honjin business and became an inn.
It's now December, and it's 4:30 p.m., so it's quite dark. However, the lights on the sloping shopping street in Kanaya create a somewhat mystical scene. There were more people and cars than expected. If you are coming from the Oigawa direction, the old Tokaido road passes under a guardrail just before JR Kanaya Station and heads towards the mountains."

It seems that this was the main inn of Kanaya-juku, but after the Great Kaei Earthquake, it closed down and operated as an inn."
