Reviews Summary

Thermae-Yu Shinjuku is highly praised as a modern, clean, and well-maintained spa offering a wide variety of natural hot spring baths and excellent amenities. Visitors appreciate its 24-hour accessibility, tattoo-friendly policy, and surprisingly good on-site restaurant, making it a great value for relaxation or an overnight stay. Some note it's more modern than traditional, but overall a top-tier experience.

"Let's be honest, half the people who use this facility are using it as a cheap-ish hostel. For that purpose (catching some quality shut-eye), it's just OK, not great.

They oversell the tickets here, and by about midnight to 3am, people are swarming the entire place trying to find a bed/recliner to sleep on. And this place is BIG (7 total floors). But they still ran out of space.

Upper floors are way too hot to fall asleep (80ish degrees F). And the bottom floors (B2) have way too many people there, so statistically you're going to definitely have at least 1 or 2 loud snorers that literally echo across the entire area.

But 1 unforgivable thing is: The recliners really aren't that comfortable. From the pictures they look like fancy movie theater seats, but for anyone above 5ft10in, your legs are going to stick out already. Not sure why they didn't just purchase those instead of whatever these are.

Food was GREAT here though. The restaurant felt high-end, with a big menu, and the food came out delicious and well cooked. That's probably the only saving grace of this place.

Some tips:
- No tats allowed (except on women).
- Everyone must wear the provided pajamas in all co-ed areas.
- You get 1 key for your shoe locker. 1 digital wristband for your main locker (after checking in), and an optional key for the bath lockers.
- Your wristband is how you pay for food and everything else (a la carte massages, etc) at this facility. The entire bill of your stay is settled at the end.
- The daypass is from 9am to midnight. You can add a nightpass that includes midnight to 9am. No re-entry allowed for either package."

"We visited this place near the end of our trip, and it couldn’t have been a better way to wrap things up. The facility was very well kept and clean, with a calm, peaceful atmosphere that instantly made us slow down and relax. Everything felt thoughtfully maintained, and the quiet setting made the experience feel restorative rather than rushed. It was the perfect, gentle way to end our Japan trip and leave on a really good note."

"1.) they have 7 onsen options for you to bathe and then a sauna and a cold bath.
2.) the free use of their amenities
• inside clothes
• towels
• hair brush
• tooth brush
• hair ties, cotton buds, razor
• blower
• facial cleanser, creams, hair oil
• shampoo, conditioner, body scrub & body wash (inside the shower and bathing area)
3.) the food isn't cheap but not too expensive either. their food is great and there are power outlets where you can charge your phone or laptops in their restaurant (if you order).
4.) there are sleeping areas where you can rest or take a nap (if you're waiting for your next bus / train, or just want to relax.)
• there are massage chairs as well where you need to pay to use it. ( wristband charge )
• they also offer massages for a fee. you can check their posters or simply ask the staffs.
• there's also a bar here where you can purchase non alcoholic beverages.
- they let you borrow a thick and warm towel to use it as a blanket
5.) separate lockers
• if you have luggages, you can store them separately with your own choice of passcode.
• lockers for your clothes which can be opened by your RFID wristband.
6.) RFID wristbands
• you tap it on their device when you want to purchase food in their restaurant, beverages, and pay them when you exit the premises.
7.) there are many toilets inside. all of them has a bidet.
8.) women's vanity area
- they have one in the shower area and one in the changing room.
- it is spacious and has nice lights. you can do your skin care / makeup or dry your hair here.

- just note that they charge you for overnight fees between 12am - 9am (if i'm not mistaken.)

overall, this is the best onsen place i've ever been to. it's quite affordable for a clean place you can relax to in shinjuku (also perfect if you're like me who's not a fan of the overwhelming crowd in shinjuku but wants to visit tokyo !)
++ they aren't really strict about tattoos!
i only spent around ¥5000-6000 including my lunch and dinner for the day
will definitely come back here again."

Navigating Thermae-Yu: Practical Tips for First-Timers

For first-time visitors to Thermae-Yu Shinjuku, understanding the etiquette and flow of a Japanese onsen is key to a smooth experience. Upon entry, you'll typically pay the admission fee and receive a locker key, a small towel, and an outfit (usually a light robe or pajamas). You'll then proceed to the changing rooms, where you'll store your belongings and change into the provided outfit. Remember to bring any personal items you might need, though many essentials are provided. Reddit

Before entering the bathing area, it's crucial to wash thoroughly at the provided shower stations. This is a fundamental part of onsen etiquette to maintain the cleanliness of the baths. Once clean, you can begin exploring the various pools. It's common to use the small towel for modesty when walking around, but it should never be placed in the bath water. The water in the baths is hot, so ease yourself in gradually. Reddit

After your soak, you can use the provided skincare products in the powder room. If you plan to use the saunas, be aware of the additional fee and any specific rules. The restaurant is a great place to refuel afterward. For those staying overnight, the late-night fee covers your stay, offering a comfortable alternative to capsule hotels. Embrace the experience and go with the flow; the staff are generally helpful if you have questions. InstagramReddit

Thermae-Yu and Tattoos: A Welcoming Policy

In Japan, traditional onsen often have strict policies against visible tattoos, stemming from historical associations with yakuza. However, Thermae-Yu Shinjuku stands out as a more tattoo-friendly establishment. This makes it a much more accessible option for international travelers who may have tattoos and wish to experience a Japanese hot spring. Instagram+1

The key requirement for entry with tattoos at Thermae-Yu is that they must be covered. Visitors are expected to use waterproof stickers or tape to conceal any visible tattoos before entering the bathing areas. This policy allows individuals to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the natural hot springs without the usual restrictions. It's a significant factor for many travelers looking for authentic Japanese experiences that are inclusive. Instagram+1

While Thermae-Yu is more accommodating, it's always wise to be prepared. Bringing a sufficient supply of waterproof tattoo cover-up stickers is recommended. This proactive approach ensures that you can fully enjoy your visit without any last-minute issues. The willingness of Thermae-Yu to adapt its policies reflects a growing understanding of diverse traveler needs and a desire to share Japanese culture more broadly. Instagram
