Timing is Everything: The Short Season

Midagahara Marsh is only accessible for a brief window, typically late June to mid-October, due to the Gassan Park Line's opening period. Global warming has made flowering seasons unpredictable, so check conditions before you go. Plan your visit to catch the peak blooms!

Embrace the Altitude: Beat the Heat

At 1,400 meters, Midagahara Marsh offers a refreshing escape from summer heat. The narrow Gassan Park Line can be a bit of a drive, but the cool, crisp air and stunning alpine scenery are well worth the journey.

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique, vast alpine marshland and the stunning seasonal wildflowers, offering a refreshing escape from summer heat. The guided tours are highly recommended for a deeper understanding of the ecosystem. However, the narrow access road and the short, weather-dependent visiting season are noted drawbacks.

""In just three short months, the seasons change from spring to autumn."

Midagahara Wetland, located at an elevation of 1,400m inside Gassansho, is a wonderful place to visit.

Climbing Mt. Gassan from the Shonai side is surprisingly challenging,
so I recommend taking a stroll through Midagahara Wetland.

The vegetation is incredibly lush.

The opening period of the Gassan Park Line largely determines the time you can visit.

Usually, the opening period is as early as late June,

The mountain closes in mid- to late October,

A short 3-4-month window is all you can visit.

From the end of June, white anemones, Japanese deutzia, rock jasmine, and aleutiana bloom in abundance.

In recent years, due to global warming, the skunk cabbage often doesn't bloom in time.

It would be nice if the prefecture could extend the opening period of the Gassan Park Line a little longer.

In summer, there are goldenrods, sundews, and white mountain bellflowers. Also, there's four-leaved sedge, cotton grass, day lilies, and water lilies.

In autumn, there are maple leaves, gentians, and goldenrods.

In some cases, these are a continuation of summer flowers.

In recent years, the flowering season has generally been delayed due to global warming.

The Gassan Park Line is narrow, so it can be a bit of a struggle to get there, but a trip there will surely help you beat the midsummer heat."

It's rare to see such a vast marshland at such a high altitude (over 1,400 meters), where not even a single tree grows.

We traveled to Gassan Hachigome by car (motorcycle).
It was about a 30-minute walk from the parking lot to the Midagahara Marsh area.
There's a rest house near the parking lot where you can purchase light meals and drinks.
Toilet fees start from 100 yen."

"This is a vast marshland that spreads across Gassan Hachime. This time, we took a one-hour tour guided by a member of the Gassan Tourist Guide Association.
Without a guide, it would just be a marshland, but walking while listening to explanations about the marsh's highlights and plants was a very fulfilling experience. Highly recommended ✌️"
