Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Goryokaku's unique star-shaped fort and the stunning cherry blossoms in spring. The panoramic views from Goryokaku Tower are a highlight, offering a fantastic perspective of the historical site. Many also praise the local Hakodate Shio Ramen for its delicious and light broth.

"I am so glad that I was able to try this place. It was great! I was surprised there was no line out front, just had to wait a couple minutes for patrons to finish eating. Counter space for only 6 people.
Bowl of large ramen and side bowl of scallops over rice. And birru of course. Mécha oishi! Super flavorful, well presented. The noodles were perfectly made with the right amount of chewy texture.

They have a placard describing the background of their ramen. To me, it helps me understand better just how much passion, effort, and pride that goes into every bowl they make."

David Tanaka

"We ended up here because another Ramen stop nearby had a long wait and there were only a few people ahead of us here. I’m so glad that happened because this was not only one of my favorite ramens in Japan, but on of my favorite meals. The owners are incredibly nice Ana the Ramen was element and light, but still had a beautiful depth of flavor. I’d go out of t way to come back here!"

David Vander Meer

"Really small ramen place that only sells one specialized Hakodate shio ramen. Even though small and it sits only 7 customers at full capacity, you don’t feel claustrophobic or tight at your seat. The owners are really nice and the chef speaks English. English menu is available as well. The ramen costs only 750 yen that comes with noodles, bamboo shoots, garnishes, and two slices of charsiew (roasted pork slice). You can pay more for additional toppings. I added a soft boiled egg at 100 yen. The soup is simple and yet tastes great. Noodles are cooked at the right firmness and the charsiew is amazing. Order at your seat and you pay after the meal at your seat as well."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Goryokaku

Goryokaku is a unique star-shaped fort built in the Edo period (1603-1868) for defensive purposes. Its design was revolutionary for its time, offering better fields of fire and fewer blind spots. The fort played a significant role in Japan's history, particularly during the Boshin War, serving as the last stronghold of the Tokugawa shogunate forces. Today, it stands as a National Special Historic Site and a symbol of Hakodate's rich past. TikTok

Walking through the grounds, you can still feel the historical significance of the place. The Goryokaku Magistrate's Office, a reconstruction of the former government building within the fort, offers insights into the administrative functions of the era. The fort's strategic design and its role in pivotal historical events make it a fascinating destination for history buffs. TikTok

The surrounding Goryokaku Park was developed after the fort's military significance waned. It's now a beloved public space, famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and its beautiful scenery throughout the year. The contrast between the historical military structure and the serene park environment creates a unique visitor experience. TikTok+1

Experiencing Cherry Blossoms at Goryokaku

Goryokaku Park is renowned as one of Hokkaido's premier spots for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). During late April to early May, the entire star-shaped fort is encircled by approximately 1,600 cherry trees, creating a breathtaking spectacle of pink and white blooms. TikTok+1

To make the most of your cherry blossom experience, it's highly recommended to visit early in the morning to avoid the peak crowds. The sight of the blossoms against the backdrop of the historical fort is truly magical. Many visitors bring picnic blankets to enjoy the scenery, though finding a good spot can be competitive during peak times. TikTok+1

For an even more stunning perspective, consider visiting Goryokaku Tower during the cherry blossom season. The tower offers an unparalleled aerial view of the fort completely blanketed in blossoms, a sight that is frequently shared on social media. Some evenings, the cherry trees are also illuminated, offering a romantic and serene hanami experience. TikTok+1

Culinary Delights: Hakodate Ramen

Hakodate is celebrated for its distinct Shio Ramen (salt-based ramen), and the area around Goryokaku is home to some of the city's most beloved ramen establishments. Unlike the richer tonkotsu or miso broths found elsewhere in Japan, Hakodate's Shio Ramen is characterized by its light, clear, and deeply flavorful broth, often made with kombu and seafood elements. TikTokReddit+1

A highly recommended spot is Ajisai Ramen, which has a branch near Goryokaku. Reviewers consistently praise its delicate yet satisfying broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and tender chashu pork. The ramen is often described as 'element and light, but still had a beautiful depth of flavor,' making it a memorable culinary experience. Reddit

Many of these ramen shops are small and intimate, offering a cozy dining experience. The owners often put immense passion and pride into their craft, which is reflected in the quality of the food. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to return for another bowl – it's that good! TikTokReddit
