#asakusa #asakusatemple #sensoji #mokuhankan #mokuhankanwoodblockprinting #ukiyoe #xilogra...

Reviews Summary

Mokuhankan is consistently praised for its high-quality, authentic Japanese woodblock prints and the opportunity to witness the traditional printing process. Visitors rave about the beautiful artwork, reasonable prices, and the welcoming, knowledgeable staff. The shop is considered a must-visit for unique souvenirs and a deep dive into a rich art form.

"Absolutely lovely shop. I had been watching Mr.David streams for a while before stopping into the shop on one of my trips and I should have done it sooner. He is everybit as informational and good hearted as he is on stream. If not more so, somehow. The selection of prints is immense and seemingly he gets in new stuff constantly. All the staff in the shop seem to share his same passion for the art and we're more than happy to help me debate between prints, discuss colors and scenes and anything in between. I visited this shop no less than 3 times while I was in Asakusa and I'm sure I could have visited more and still seen new pieces I would have been tempted to take home. Over all I think I bought 7-8 prints. And can't wait to frame them and put them up in my home. As well as give out a couple as gifts.
All around great art shop if you are looking for amazing souvenirs. Or if you just want to talk with Mr.David about the advancement of ai and the path of humanity into the future. 😁"

"This was so fun to stop and check out the artwork. We knew of this store before coming to japan and made a point to stop by. We got to meet David Bull which was incredible for us geeks.

We spent a good amount on large woodblock prints from artists we know and love, but there were many less expensive options as well. The staff are friendly and interesting with many great stories and in depth knowledge about the artwork. It's an easy way to spend 30 minutes, buy some souvenirs and enjoy a day at Asakusa."

"High quality traditional Japanese woodblock prints! There is a great selection and everything is very well priced.

I had my prints shipped back to the US. The shop will professionally package and arrange for quick shipment (even times the delivery for me)! Communication on the shipment was great and I could easily use the provided tracking number with the Japanese shipping company as well as our local USPS tracking website.

After following Dave’s streams it was a huge treat to visit the shop in person. Dave wasn’t available during my visit (depends on his schedule), but the staff are all awesome and very helpful."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Mokuhanga: A Traditional Craft

Mokuhanga, or Japanese woodblock printing, is an art form with a rich history dating back centuries. It involves a meticulous process where artists carve intricate designs into wooden blocks, typically cherry wood. Each color in a print requires a separate block, demanding incredible precision and planning. The carving is followed by the printing stage, where water-based inks are applied to the blocks and then transferred to paper using a baren (a printing tool) and a printing press or hand pressure. This traditional method results in prints with a unique texture and subtle variations that make each piece special. TikTok+1

Many of the prints you'll find at Mokuhankan are either faithful reproductions of iconic Ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) masterpieces by artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige, or original works by contemporary artists who are keeping the tradition alive. The dedication to preserving and evolving this craft is evident in every piece. TikTok+1

Visitors often express awe at the level of detail and craftsmanship involved. Seeing the artists at work, from the initial carving to the final print, provides a profound appreciation for the skill and dedication required. It’s a chance to witness a living tradition firsthand. TikTokReddit+1
