Reviews Summary

Ogijima Island is praised for its charming small-town atmosphere, abundant friendly cats, and captivating art installations. Visitors highlight the beautiful scenery and the unique experience of exploring a less-touristy Japanese island. However, some note that cafes and shops may have limited opening hours, and the island's hilly terrain requires comfortable footwear.

"Loved it, really cute small town vibes.

Lots of hiking trails and beautiful scenery to enjoy.

They also have a few cute cafes and restaurants that are definitely worth checking out. Help support the islands locals economy.

I recommend Damonte & Co, and the Ogijima Library

Also! There are lots of signs on the island that are in English, reminding people not to enter / trespass into residential areas. Just something to be mindful of."

"Probably one of the best Island experience I had in Japan. I am definietely returning here again. I want to visit here when cafes are opened; I want to visit here with more times. I highly recommend Ogijima to all of you. If you have to choose only one of Seto Inland Island to travel to, it has to be Ogijima!"

Kyujin Kim

"It's an island of cats. There are cats scattered everywhere. They're tame and will let you pet them.
It's an island of art. During the Setouchi Triennale, the island is filled with art, with high-quality works of art.
There are huge differences in elevation, and there are few roads that can be called roads, so the village is crisscrossed with paths that can only be reached by foot. This means it's an island to explore on foot. The only lighthouse that stands alone is Ogijima Lighthouse, a beautiful lighthouse with a retro feel, but it takes time to get there and back, so it's best to just enjoy a tour of the village and a meal (the island's famous octopus) without forcing yourself to go."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring Ogijima's Art Scene

Ogijima gained significant international recognition as a venue for the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival held every three years. This has left a lasting legacy of art installations scattered across the island, transforming old houses and public spaces into galleries. These artworks range from whimsical sculptures to thought-provoking installations, often integrated seamlessly with the natural environment and the island's existing structures. Instagram+1

Visitors can discover these pieces by simply wandering through the village and along its coastal paths. The art adds a unique layer to the island's charm, encouraging exploration and discovery. While the Triennale is a specific event, many of these art pieces remain, making Ogijima an 'art island' year-round. The Setouchi Digital app can be a helpful tool for locating these installations and learning more about their context. Instagram

It's important to note that some art pieces might be housed in former residences, so respecting private property and following signage is crucial. The art contributes to the island's narrative, blending contemporary creativity with the enduring spirit of traditional island life. Reddit

The Island of Cats

Ogijima is affectionately known as a 'cat island' due to the large number of friendly felines that inhabit its streets and alleys. These cats are well-accustomed to human presence and often approach visitors, seeking attention or a gentle pet. InstagramReddit+1

Many of these cats are cared for by the island residents, contributing to their tame nature. While exploring, you'll encounter them lounging in sunny spots, weaving through narrow paths, or even greeting you near the port. It's a delightful experience for cat lovers, offering ample opportunities for interaction and photography. InstagramReddit

Remember to be respectful of the cats' space and well-being. While they are friendly, they are still animals. Avoid chasing them or forcing interaction. Supporting local businesses also indirectly helps in the care of these beloved island residents. Reddit

Navigating Ogijima's Terrain

Ogijima is characterized by its hilly terrain and a network of narrow, winding paths rather than wide roads. This makes it an island best explored on foot, offering an intimate experience of its landscape and village. Reddit

The main path from the port towards the Ogijima Lighthouse is paved and offers scenic coastal views, but it can be a significant walk. For those who prefer less strenuous exploration, sticking to the village area and the flatter coastal routes is recommended. Reddit Google Maps can be helpful, but be aware that it might sometimes suggest steeper, less conventional paths. Reddit

Given the terrain, wearing comfortable and sturdy walking shoes is paramount. The island's elevation changes can be surprising, so be prepared for inclines and declines. Visiting during the spring or fall can make the walking more pleasant, as summers can be hot and humid with more insects. Reddit
