Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the unique cross-shaped river confluence at Jujikyo Gorge, calling it a 'truly moving' natural spectacle. The scenic suspension bridge and the rugged beauty of the Kurobe Gorge Lower Corridor are also highly praised. However, the steep and slippery descent to the viewing point requires significant caution, and the prohibition of camping is a key point of emphasis for responsible tourism. Reddit

"A Break

The Kurobe River, flowing through the Kurobe Gorge Lower Corridor in Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture, is where the Tsurugisawa River, which flows from Mount Tsurugi, and the Bogoyazawa River, which flows from Mount Jigatake and Mount Kashimayari, meet. There's a small plaza where you can leave your backpack and head down. Otherwise, you won't see the cross-shaped intersection often seen in photos. You can also descend a large rock face using a rope, but it's slippery, and at least one person slips and falls into the river every year, so be careful. While you won't die, it can be a tragic experience, requiring the call of a rescue team.

There's a tent site-like area, but camping is strictly prohibited. There were also traces of what appeared to be a campfire, and I sincerely hope people don't do this.

"Perhaps it could be described as a scenic spot in the Kurobe Lower Corridor?
I'd seen it many times in photos, but actually being there was truly moving, with a landscape carved by nature.
Arriving from the dam side, there is a fairly wide flat area (perfect for resting), and to the left there is a suspension bridge, and to the right there is an observation deck. To get to the observation deck you have to go down a steep slope with a rope hanging down, so it's best to leave your luggage at the front.
It was a great spot to see the waterfall up close and enjoy the cool breeze.
Heading towards Asobara Onsen, there is a suspension bridge that is not very long and does sway a little, but it offers a view of Juji Gorge from above and another spectacular view!
It's difficult to get to and go further, but I'd like to visit again when the autumn leaves have progressed a little more."

Keiichi Ishizaka

"This is the only place in Shimono Korikiri that is large enough to pitch a tent, making it a great place to take a break. There is also a suspension bridge, so please feel free to walk alone."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Jujikyo Gorge

Jujikyo Gorge, also known as Ikuji no Shozu Springs, is a remarkable natural phenomenon where the Tsurugisawa River and the Bogoyazawa River converge with the Kurobe River. This confluence creates a distinct, almost perfect cross shape, giving the gorge its name ('Jumonji' meaning 'cross'). The rivers originate from prominent peaks in the Northern Japan Alps: the Tsurugisawa River flows from Mount Tsurugi, and the Bogoyazawa River originates from Mount Jigatake and Mount Kashimayari. This geological setting highlights the powerful erosive forces that have shaped the Kurobe Gorge over millennia. Reddit

The landscape is characterized by steep, rugged terrain, a testament to the river's carving power. Visitors often remark on the 'landscape carved by nature,' emphasizing the raw, untamed beauty of the area. The Kurobe Gorge Lower Corridor itself is a significant natural feature, known for its dramatic scenery and the impressive Kurobe Dam further upstream. The confluence at Jujikyo Gorge is a focal point within this larger, awe-inspiring environment. Reddit

Safety and Accessibility

Visiting Jujikyo Gorge requires a degree of physical preparedness. The most direct route to the viewing plaza involves descending a steep slope, which can be slippery, especially after rain or in damp conditions. For added safety, a rope is often provided to assist visitors. Travelers are strongly advised to wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. Reddit

Accidents, including slips and falls into the river, have been reported, underscoring the importance of caution. While the area is described as a 'break spot,' it's crucial to understand that it is a natural, undeveloped site. Camping is strictly prohibited, and visitors are urged to respect the environment by not leaving any trace of their presence, such as campfires. Reddit

For those with mobility concerns or very young children, the steep descent may pose a challenge. It is recommended to assess personal fitness levels and consider the conditions before attempting the descent. Leaving heavier items at the designated plaza can significantly ease the journey. Reddit
