What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Oshima Tsumugi Village for its authentic preservation of traditional Amami Oshima silk crafts, particularly the unique mud dyeing and weaving processes. While the high cost of kimonos is noted, the availability of affordable souvenirs and the engaging dyeing workshops are highly appreciated. Some find the English information limited, but the overall experience is considered a valuable cultural immersion.
"This place is the last place to carry on the traditional Amami Kimono craft. The dedication and creativity of the ladt remaining craftspeople give you food for thought. The kimonos are very expensive though, prices ranging from 300,000 to 1.1 million yen, and rightly so, but you can buy some souvenirs at a reasonable price."

"Really great place to go and learn about the dying process and technique of Amami and see lots of the products they make at their gift shop. However there’s not much information in English, so you’ll need to do the QR code scan and translation thing.
Be sure to go one of the free tours, so that you can see everything in action even if you can understand the guide.
The mud dying and weaving process is a traditional technique unique to the island and you can bring your own things to dye if you want to. There are also various other things like T-Shirts, handkerchiefs, eco bags etc that you can choose from. Prices vary. Be sure to call to make a reservation to get your preferred time slot, but they may have openings later in the day if you just show up and ask as well."

It’s worth a visit if you treasure and respect traditional culture. It’s a time capsule. Prices are very steep. It’s not for the ordinary man on the street. But rather for distinguished individuals. Please do show support local producers where you can. Don’t just come to Amami, take a swim and leave."
