"As I was driving towards my hotel on Cape Ashizuri, I saw a large sign. It said "Turn right, John Manjiro's birthplace." I instinctively turned the wheel. I went down a narrow road and emerged at a harbor. Long ago, Nakahama Manjiro was shipwrecked after leaving that harbor.
Last year, I went to an eel restaurant in Asakusa that has been around since the Edo period, and it turned out to be a place John Manjiro often frequented.
This year, when I went to visit Natsume Soseki's grave, I found Nakahama Manjiro's grave nearby, so I paid a visit there as well.
This time, on my way to a hotel where I stayed about 20 years ago, I saw a sign for his birthplace.
All of these actions have been unexpected. Perhaps they are fate, too."
