What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Toyama Bay is celebrated for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the mesmerizing bioluminescence of firefly squid and the majestic landscapes of the Tateyama Alpine Route. Visitors praise the abundant fresh seafood and the serene, less-crowded atmosphere compared to major tourist hubs. However, some note that firefly squid sightings can be rare, and the cost of the Alpine Route can add up.
"Biolumineszénz. Between March and June, thousands of bioluminescent firefly squid come together in a stunning electric-blue display that is one of the most arresting and colourful marvels on Earth."
World Special
"Since Toyama Prefecture changed its name from Etchu to Toyama after the Meiji Restoration, I believe Toyama Bay was named after the Meiji period. The name "Arisoumi" (the sea) appeared until the Edo period, but this didn't refer to the entire bay, so I suspect it wasn't considered a bay until the early modern period.
The bay is over 1,000 meters deep. Water from the 3,000-meter-high mountains flows into the bay via rivers, carrying abundant nutrients. As a result, an abundance of delicious fish is landed here, including yellowtail, pufferfish, firefly squid, white shrimp, sweet shrimp, sablefish, and red snow crab.
It's also home to mirage spots.
The bay recently joined the "World's Most Beautiful Bays Club." Efforts to improve the bay's landscape, such as beach cleanups and lowering tetrapods below the waterline, are ongoing, but it's still only half-way there.
While there are many anglers, the Noto Peninsula offers a much better chance of catching some fish. Unfortunately, it seems that there are fewer fish within reach of casting from the shore than there used to be."
