"Mount Unzen is the collective name for a volcanic group consisting of over 20 mountains in the central Shimabara Peninsula of Nagasaki Prefecture. Mount Fugen, at 1,486m above sea level, was its highest peak.
In 1990, eruptions began for the first time in 198 years, and Heisei-Shinzan, at 1,483m, became the highest peak in Nagasaki Prefecture.
