Easy daytrip from Fukuoka, Japan = Yanagawa and Daizafu! 🇯🇵🛶 We went at the end of April 2024 (seat sale budol lol) and wanted to make the most of our 3 days! 📆 The Yanagawa canals are a famous tourist experience so we booked ours ahead of time to ensure a slot (~₱600 for a joiner). ✨ It’s about 1.5 hrs away from Fukuoka, so to break the trip on the way home, we dropped by Daizafu to see the fa...

Yanagawa is a peaceful little town on the way to Fukuoka, known as the “Venice of Kyushu” with over 470 km of canals. As the boats glide through the narrow waterways, passengers have to gently bend down to pass under the low stone bridges — it’s part of the fun! The boatmen often sing traditional songs along the way, adding to the old-time charm. A perfect day trip from Kumamoto or Fukuoka!

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Yanagawa canals for their unique charm and the relaxing Donko-bune boat tours, often highlighting the entertaining boatmen. While some find the commentary limited in English, the overall experience is highly recommended as a peaceful escape and a culinary delight, particularly the local Unaju dish. TikTokReddit

"Beautiful and historically rich place. There are many operators located in various spots along the canal, offering boat tours across the canals."

Cheeky Moron

"Beautiful river canal tour on boat by a Japanese boatman. He couldn’t speak english so the whole tour was done in Japanese. There are some parts we had to duck our head to avoid the bridges. Tour is ¥1000 per person and also included pickup from the parking to the start point of the tour via shuttle bus.

Embarking on a donko-bune, a gondola-like wooden boat, passengers are gently guided along the canals by skilled boatmen using long poles. These tours provide a unique vantage point to appreciate Yanagawa’s picturesque scenery, including willow-lined banks, traditional architecture, and seasonal flora. The boatmen often enhance the journey by sharing local history and singing traditional songs, enriching the cultural immersion.

The guy is entertaining and knowledgeable."

"It’s the most fun I’ve had in my Fukuoka trip. At 10 USD per person via Kkday app, I would have paid double than that and I’d be as happy. The boat man was friendly, funny and just a ball of joy. The overall ride was serene but also had a bit of adventure especially when you need to duck from the many bridges surrounding the area. If you’re thinking whether you’ll do this or not, let me save you some time, DO IT!!!"
