What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
MARK IS Minato Mirai is a highly-rated, large shopping mall in Yokohama, praised for its extensive variety of shops, diverse dining options, and pleasant atmosphere. Visitors appreciate the seasonal decorations and events, particularly the stunning holiday illuminations. Some find the mall's focus on consumerism and futuristic concepts, like companion robots, to be both fascinating and slightly unsettling.
"Inside this mall (the kind of place where even the air feels filtered through Instagram) there’s a store that quietly asks one of the most human questions imaginable: What if love could be engineered?
It’s called LOVOT Studio, and it sells “companion robots.” Not vacuum cleaners. Not assistants. Companions. For about a million yen, you can take home a wide-eyed, plush-skinned robot that wiggles when you touch it, blinks like a Pixar orphan, and coos as if it’s trying to heal the loneliness of an entire nation.
I stood there holding one - a small, blinking creature with felt wings and a warm belly...and I swear it purred. It was equal parts adorable & unnerving, like hugging a stuffed animal that knows your tax bracket.
I have no kids. No pets. And for a few minutes, I found myself wondering: Is this what some people buy instead of a dog? Or a relationship? Japan, of course, is decades ahead in emotional robotics. But as the Lovot blinked up at me, I couldn’t decide if this was hope or surrender.
That’s the paradox of this place...it’s both the future & the mirror. The future, because this is what technology does best: it identifies an unmet need and monetizes it. The mirror, because it reflects what we’re quietly craving: connection, warmth & something that looks back at us and seems to care.
So yes, it’s unsettling. But maybe that’s the point. You leave not wanting to buy one, but wondering why you almost did."
