Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Awashima Shrine Uraga for its stunning ocean views and unique spiritual significance, particularly its role in matchmaking and its rare phallic worship artifacts. The climb is noted, but the panoramic vistas from the top are a major draw. While generally quiet, the shrine becomes lively during the Hinamatsuri festival on March 3rd, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese celebrations.

"This is the first time I've seen a collaboration with Hina dolls.

I've been searching for phallic worship. Kanagawa Prefecture is heavily associated with sericulture from Atsugi to Lake Miyagase, but it's sparse elsewhere. I haven't found it anywhere else on the Miura Peninsula.

I knew they were doing the Nagashi Hina dolls before I visited, but even though it was the middle of summer, there were Hina dolls on display inside the main hall. There were two offerings sticking out on either side, and I've never seen anything like that. I wonder what I'd say if my kids asked me, "What's that?"

Because I was far away through the glass, I couldn't see the details of the offerings, but judging from their shapes, the one on the right appears to be a Jomon stone rod, and the one on the left was made more recently. Combined with the dolls, it was an incredibly rare sight."

"This is my second visit.
I wanted to visit Awashima Shrine, so I researched it and found out it's in Ashina, so I headed there right away.

As the shrine enshrines Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, the torii gate is small and gives the impression of being a cute shrine.
(Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto is a small god also known as Issunboshi.)

The main hall is small and cute, but it's a powerful shrine.

It's usually quiet and deserted, but I've heard it gets lively during Hinamatsuri, so I'd like to go.

You have to climb the stairs to get there, so you can get a beautiful view of the ocean from the side of the main hall.

There's also Ryugusha Shrine next door, which offers an even more beautiful view of the ocean and is truly a power spot.

You can enjoy the most amazing views."

It's a branch shrine of the more famous Awashima Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture, carrying forward traditions of spiritual protection. The shrine enshrines Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, a deity often associated with healing and small stature, sometimes likened to the folklore character Issunboshi. This connection is subtly reflected in the shrine's modest torii gate, adding to its charm. Reddit

Beyond its traditional roles, Awashima Shrine Uraga is notable for its unique phallic worship artifacts.
