What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Taikanzan Observatory for its stunning, uncrowded views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi, making it a superior alternative to busier spots. The easy car access and unique photo opportunities like the giant swing are frequently praised, though winter ice in the parking lot requires caution.
"Awesome view of Mt Fuji without the crowds. This place can only be reached if you drive so that means absolutely few tourists compared to Hakone area. Much better than Owakudani. We went twice on sunrise and sunset in decemeber. Careful slippery carpark with ice"
boon suan Tan
"Lovely drive from Chiba towards Izu we pass by the observation deck to catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji.
The rest area has restaurants and toilets"

"Few tourists and great view of Fuji-san (Mount Fuji). We were lucky to visit this place with good weather. You can see Fuji-san from the parking lot, and even better when you walk into the Sky Lounge. There is a giant swing what reminds me of “Heidi of the Alps” anime. The Sky Lounge contains a food court (snacks to light meal) and restroom. Very much a Showa period building."

The Allure of Mount Fuji Views
The best time to witness this spectacle is on clear days. Early mornings often offer crisp, bright views, while sunsets paint the sky and mountain in warm hues. However, it's crucial to check the weather forecast before your visit, as clouds can easily obscure the view. The observatory's location also provides a beautiful panorama of the Hakone valley, adding another layer to the scenic beauty.
For those seeking the quintessential Mount Fuji photo, Taikanzan is a strong contender. The combination of accessibility (for drivers), fewer crowds, and stunning natural beauty makes it a highly recommended stop for anyone wanting to capture the majesty of Fuji-san.
Beyond the View: Amenities and Activities
One of the unique features highlighted by visitors is the giant swing. Reminiscent of the anime 'Heidi of the Alps,' this swing provides a playful and memorable photo opportunity with Mount Fuji as a backdrop. It's a simple yet engaging activity that adds an element of fun to the visit, particularly for families or those looking for a quirky souvenir photo.
Car enthusiasts also find Taikanzan Observatory appealing, with many noting the presence of beautiful cars at the location. This unofficial car meet aspect adds to the vibrant atmosphere, making it a pleasant spot for those who appreciate automotive aesthetics alongside natural beauty.
