What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the dramatic geological formations of Ichinokura Gorge, particularly the imposing east face. The scenic traverse trail and seasonal alpine flowers add to its natural beauty. However, hikers should be prepared for potentially challenging terrain, variable weather including fog, and the presence of horseflies in summer.
"Mt. Ichinokura is a peak 1.8km north of Tomanomimi on Mt. Tanigawa, about an hour's hike. The east face of Mt. Ichinokura is considered one of Japan's three great rock formations, alongside Mt. Tsurugi and Mt. Hotaka, and is renowned as a representative rock formation of Mt. Tanigawa.
On this day, a vast sea of clouds covered the Gunma side, and dense fog covered the area up to Tomanomimi. Waterfall clouds cascaded down from the Tanigawa mountain range. After walking the spectacular traverse trail from Tomanomimi to Okinomimi and passing through the inner sanctuary of Tanigawa Fuji Sengen Shrine, the foot traffic thinned out, making for a quieter hike, a stark contrast to the bustling weekday scene. However, the horseshoe-shaped area on the Gunma side was thick with fog, and Ichinokurazawa was obscured by the fog.
However, Mt. Ichinokura pierced the fog, offering a 360-degree view of the dynamic waterfall clouds cascading down from the Tanigawa mountain range. Mt. Naeba, Mt. Makihata, Mt. Ushigatake, and Mt. Hotaka were also beautiful. In addition, cute flowers such as spirea, alpine daisy, and white mountain bellflower are blooming in the flower fields."

"We climbed along the ridge from Mt. Tanigawa. It's a relatively easy route, but there are some rocky areas and chains, and if you lose your footing you could fall off the cliff, so if you're not in good physical condition or have already exhausted your energy, you should be very careful when passing through. The summit is away from the cliffs, so it's safe and you can take your time eating.
The refuge hut is not a place to rest.
For a great view, if you go a little further from the summit towards Mt. Tanigawa, you can get a spectacular view of Ichinokurazawa.
The sign at the summit was broken, so be careful on the path just in case."

"It's about an hour from Tanigawadake.
The bamboo grass on the south side has been cut and Tanigawadake is visible.
Moguradake, one of Gunma's 100 famous mountains, is a 30-minute round trip along the ridge path.
It's not an interesting place, with just a drum-can-shaped individual shelter and a long, narrow open space.
There is a strange escape route down to Doai, but as the warning sign says, it looks dangerous.
It's best to look up at Ichinokura after all."

Physical fitness is a key consideration. While the hike from Mt. Tanigawa to the summit can be completed in about an hour, the terrain can be demanding. Seasonal considerations are also important. During the summer months, horseflies can be a nuisance, so carrying insect repellent is recommended. The refuge huts found on the mountain are generally intended for emergency use rather than comfortable resting spots. Always check weather forecasts before your trip, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, and be prepared for a variety of weather, even if the forecast seems clear.
