Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Shonan Ohashi Bridge for its stunning panoramic views of Sagami Bay and the iconic Mt. Fuji on clear days. The bridge's role as a scenic viewpoint, especially when walking across, is highly appreciated. While the naming rights have changed the official name, the natural beauty remains the primary draw.

"In the days before live cameras and ocean condition data were easily available, when you came from the industrial road or R129 and finally saw the ocean as you crossed this bridge, you would be happy or sad depending on the height of the waves and the strength of the wind ☺️ If you were driving, you would pass by in a flash, but if you were walking, it would take quite a while. The view of Sagami Bay and Mt. Fuji over Shonan Plain from the viewpoint on the bridge is beautiful."

"This 698m-long bridge spans the mouth of the Sagami River along National Route 134.

I remembered it as Shonan Ohashi Bridge, so I wondered what it was called, and when I looked into it, I found out that naming rights have been exercised since 2010, and the bridge was named after it. Incidentally, this is apparently the first time that naming rights have been exercised for a bridge.

In 2010, the bridge was expanded to four lanes in both directions, which has reduced congestion, but I remember it being one of the congestion points on Route 134 when it was just two lanes.

The view from the mouth of the river to the sea is outstanding. It was also selected as one of the "100 Best Bridges of Kanagawa" in 1991."

The second bridge was replaced in 1986.

The road was converted to four lanes in 2010.

The name was changed to "TRUSCO Shonan Bridge" in 2010.

*TRUSCO Nakayama acquired the naming rights for the Shonan Bridge from the prefecture and later renewed them. This is the first time in Japan that a bridge has been given the right to name a bridge.

♣The western foot of the Shonan Bridge has been maintained by a levee and stepped revetments. It is used not only for fishing, but also as a place to stroll and relax."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Evolution of the Shonan Ohashi Bridge

The Shonan Ohashi Bridge, now officially known as the TRUSCO Shonan Bridge, has a history of development and expansion. The first bridge was completed in 1936, followed by a replacement in 1986. A significant upgrade occurred in 2010 when the road was converted to four lanes in both directions, greatly reducing congestion that was once a common issue on the two-lane structure. This expansion has made travel along National Route 134 smoother for many visitors heading to popular coastal destinations. Reddit

The bridge's name change in 2010 to 'TRUSCO Shonan Bridge' marked a unique milestone as it was the first time naming rights were exercised for a bridge in Japan. TRUSCO Nakayama acquired these rights, which have since been renewed. This initiative highlights a modern approach to infrastructure funding and branding, though many locals may still refer to it by its original name, Shonan Ohashi Bridge. Reddit

Spanning 698 meters across the mouth of the Sagami River, the bridge is a crucial artery for the Shonan region. Its strategic location offers not only a vital transportation link but also spectacular views, making it a point of interest for both commuters and tourists alike. The bridge was recognized for its scenic value, being selected as one of the '100 Best Bridges of Kanagawa' in 1991. Reddit

Experiencing the Views: Beyond the Drive

While many pass over the Shonan Ohashi Bridge by car, taking the time to walk or cycle across offers a profoundly different experience. The original sentiment of happiness or sadness based on ocean conditions, as described by past visitors, is best appreciated at a slower pace. Walking allows you to truly absorb the expansive vistas of Sagami Bay and the dynamic meeting of the Sagami River with the Pacific Ocean. Reddit

The view of Mt. Fuji from the western foot of the bridge is particularly moving on clear days. This iconic peak, often framed by the coastal landscape, provides a breathtaking backdrop that has inspired many visitors. Early mornings are frequently cited as the best time to catch this view, as the air is often clearer, offering unobstructed sightlines. Reddit

Beyond the grand vistas, the area around the western foot of the bridge has been developed with levees and stepped revetments, creating a pleasant space for strolling and relaxation. This area is also noted as a good spot for fishing, adding another dimension to the bridge's appeal as a scenic and recreational point. Reddit
