Petra, one of the 7 World Wonders, is nearly empty in peak season, March 2025 🤯 While good for photo ops, this is honestly pretty depressing as it’s made life very difficult for local business owners. Vendors can barely sell anything, so come to Jordan! 🇯🇴 #petra #wadimusa #worldwonder #jordantravel #jordancountry

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently describe Petra as a magical and breathtaking experience, with the Treasury and Monastery being standout highlights. The sheer scale and ancient artistry carved into the sandstone leave a lasting impression. However, some find the abundance of vendors and the pressure to purchase services or rides to be overwhelming, and the extensive walking can be taxing.

"Walking through Petra was magical — from the Siq opening, up to the Treasury, to the Qasr al-Bint, to the climb to the Monastery. Every corner has history carved in stone. Wear good shoes, stay hydrated, and take your time — it’s an unforgettable experience.

Ideally 2 days is good, but if you have a whole day starting at 6-7am in the morning, you can go to the Monastery, climb up and make it back. Its taxing, but doable.
(Even if you come back on the 2nd day, you will still have to start from the beginning?

Best way is to slowly reach Qasr al-Bint, take a rest, eat some food and continue to the Monastery"

"Just incredible. When you come to Petra, you are expecting to be stunned, but nothing can really prepare you for the immense beauty of this place. Not many places in the world are blessed with both unique archaeological remains and such a spectacular natural setting. If you can, don’t miss out the monastery. We only stayed one day, but this place deserves at least three days."

Simona Bordoni

"An absolutely awesome experience. It's an enjoyable walk through the canyons leading to this beautiful site. Seeing the Treasury for the first time was breathtaking. There are so many cool sites to see once you get past the Treasury. I'm so glad I went to see this "Wonder Of The World". If you go, plan to spend at least several hours there

A note of caution. There are a lot of vendors trying to sell you all kinds of souvenirs, photos with camels, horseback rides, etc. Be sure to negotiate any and all prices especially for getting on a camel and getting a picture. Beware of your surroundings as there are a lot of people."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Nabataean Legacy

Petra, often called the 'Rose City,' is an ancient archaeological wonder carved directly into vibrant sandstone cliffs. Its history dates back to as early as 300 BCE, when it served as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. The Nabataeans were skilled traders and engineers, establishing Petra as a crucial hub for incense, spice, and silk routes connecting Arabia, Egypt, and Syria. Their mastery of water management is evident in the complex system of dams, cisterns, and channels that supplied the city with water in the arid desert. Instagram+3

The city's strategic location and the Nabataeans' ingenuity allowed Petra to flourish for centuries. However, shifts in trade routes and a devastating earthquake in 363 AD led to its decline. Petra was largely abandoned and 'lost' to the Western world until its rediscovery by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New7Wonders of the World, offering a profound glimpse into a sophisticated ancient civilization. TikTokInstagram

Recent discoveries, such as potential underground structures, continue to hint at the mysteries still buried beneath Petra, suggesting that our understanding of this ancient city may still be evolving. TikTok

Navigating Petra: The Walk and Key Sites

Your journey into Petra begins with a walk through the Siq, a narrow, winding gorge flanked by towering sandstone cliffs that can reach up to 80 meters high. This dramatic entrance builds anticipation for what lies ahead. The walk is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) and takes about 30-45 minutes, offering stunning natural beauty and glimpses of ancient water channels. TikTokReddit

Emerging from the Siq, you're met with the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh), Petra's most famous facade, intricately carved into the rock face. This is often the first major stop for visitors. From here, the site opens up to reveal a vast city with numerous other significant structures. Don't miss the Royal Tombs, the Great Temple, and Qasr al-Bint. For those seeking a more challenging but rewarding experience, the climb to the Monastery (Ad-Deir) involves over 800 steps and offers a monumental structure comparable to the Treasury, along with breathtaking panoramic views. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the grand facades, Petra also features countless ancient cave dwellings, which were once homes and tombs for its inhabitants. These simpler, hand-carved spaces offer a different perspective on daily life in the ancient city. Exploring these areas provides a deeper understanding of the Nabataeans' architectural prowess and their adaptation to the desert environment. TikTok

Practicalities: What to Bring and Consider

To make the most of your visit to Petra, preparation is key. Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are non-negotiable, as you'll be covering significant distances on varied terrain. TikTokReddit+1 Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended, along with a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Crucially, carry plenty of water; staying hydrated is vital, especially during warmer months. TikTokReddit

When it comes to navigating the site, be prepared for numerous vendors offering souvenirs, camel rides, and other services. While these can be part of the experience, it's important to negotiate prices firmly and clearly. Redditors advise against saying 'maybe later' as vendors may persistently follow you. Reddit There are also ethical considerations regarding animal rides; some travelers report concerns about animal welfare and recommend skipping these services. TikTokReddit

Consider purchasing a Jordan Pass before your trip, as it often includes entry to Petra and other attractions, offering significant savings. TikTok Arriving at Petra right at opening time (6 AM) is highly recommended to avoid the peak crowds and the intense midday heat, allowing for a more serene and enjoyable exploration.
