Understanding the RFID Card System
It's important to note that these RFID cards cannot be obtained online. Pilgrims must visit one of the designated registration centers to collect their card. The main counter in Katra Chowk is the most prominent, but additional points exist at the Katra Bus Stand, Katra Railway Station, and even Jammu Airport, offering flexibility for pilgrims arriving through different modes of transport.
While the system aims for efficiency, crowds can be a factor, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons. Travelers are advised to be patient and plan their visit to the counter accordingly. The staff are generally reported to be helpful, and the presence of multiple counters helps in managing the flow of pilgrims, making the process as smooth as possible.
Navigating the Registration Process
Once you reach the counter, you'll find several service points. The process involves registering your details and receiving your Yatra i-card (RFID card). While the staff are known for their good behavior and efficient service, it's wise to anticipate potential queues. Many travelers suggest arriving early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the midday rush and minimize waiting times.
After successfully obtaining your RFID card, you'll be cleared to proceed towards the Banganga entry gate, the starting point of the trek. From the registration counter, you can easily arrange for an auto-rickshaw to take you to Banganga, which is approximately 1.5 km away. This ensures a seamless transition from registration to the commencement of your pilgrimage.
