What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve is praised for its stunning, almost surreal natural beauty, particularly the Aksu Gorge and expansive mountain views. Visitors highlight the rich biodiversity and the rewarding experience of hiking through pristine landscapes. However, some find the facilities rundown and note potential language barriers with guides, alongside the inconvenience of the broken gorge boat.
"Century-old nature reserve. However the place is pretty rundown. Note that the boat has broken down so no more gorge/canyon exploration. Guides speak minimal English and may not be able to read Russian. Additional note for birdwatchers all tours start after park office opens at 9+. So your chance of spotting birds on park-arranged treks is slim."

"What a beautiful place, reminiscent of a stunning landscape painting.
Our journey began at the Aksu Gorge. The entire route is breathtaking, featuring endless rolling plains and distant mountains. Upon reaching the gorge’s entrance, we found a small house belonging to the rangers responsible for the area.
From there, we embarked on a two-to-three-hour hike up and down into the gorge, depending on our fitness level. The journey was worth it, though. The water in the Aksu River at the bottom was crystal clear, and the landscape was surreal. We even took a refreshing sip from a nearby stream.
After that we hiked back up and enjoyed our packed lunch’s. Thereafter we took a scenic drive around the reserve, and we spotted some wild birds and partridges along the way. However, as we were returning, the weather turned heavy, and our car got stuck in mud. The driver managed to slowly and carefully free us from the sticky situation. What an experience!
Despite the tiring nature of the entire journey, it was definitely worth it."

Exploring the Aksu Gorge
While the boat that previously offered exploration of the canyon is currently out of order, the hike itself provides ample opportunity to appreciate the scale and beauty of the gorge. Along the way, you might even find opportunities to take a refreshing sip from a nearby stream. Remember to wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for an uneven terrain as you descend and ascend the gorge.
This experience is a prime example of the reserve's raw, natural beauty. The combination of the powerful river, the towering rock formations, and the surrounding flora creates a memorable visual spectacle. It's a must-do for anyone visiting the reserve, offering a tangible connection with the powerful forces of nature.
Wildlife and Birdwatching Opportunities
Birdwatchers will find this reserve particularly rewarding, with over 260 bird species recorded. The diverse habitats within the reserve, from river valleys to mountain slopes, support a wide variety of avian life. However, a key piece of advice for birdwatchers is to be aware of the tour schedules. As tours typically start after the park office opens at 9 AM, early morning bird activity might be missed. Planning a private excursion or discussing this with your guide could help maximize your chances of spotting elusive species.
Spotting wildlife and birds requires patience and a keen eye. While guides can assist in locating animals, the reserve's vastness means sightings are never guaranteed. The best approach is to immerse yourself in the environment, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate any wildlife encounters that occur.
Navigating the Reserve and Visitor Experience
Communication can also be a challenge, as guides may speak minimal English and Russian. Visitors are advised to prepare for potential language barriers and perhaps use translation apps or visual aids. Despite these challenges, the natural beauty of the reserve often outweighs these inconveniences.
Visitors should also be prepared for the unpredictable weather. The region can experience rapid weather changes, and roads within or leading to the reserve can become muddy, potentially causing vehicles to get stuck. This adds an element of adventure but also highlights the need for appropriate footwear and potentially a robust vehicle or reliable tour operator.
