Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Reteti Elephant Sanctuary for its vital conservation work and the deep connection it fosters with the local Samburu community. The heartwarming sight of rescued elephants and the dedication of their keepers leave a lasting impression. While the journey can be challenging, the ethical approach and positive impact make it a highly recommended experience.

"This elephant reserve is like no other. Retiti iis run by the local people and tied to other programs that support the local people like milk to mamas , where the village women can sell any excess milk from their goats or camels, to feed the elephants. Retiti is supported by the organization, Sarara, which has a 5star eco lodge, again primarily run by the local people and also supports other programs like the mobile women and children mobile clinic and Montessori schools. This was an amazing experience all around and I couldn’t recommend it more."

"What a beautiful and serious job they are doing for conservation of several animal species throughout Northern Kenya! The visit is really worthy it. We were lucky to have an encounter with older giraffe who have been rescued by Reteti when they were baby and now come back to the sanctuary from time to time although they have been released in nature! The baby elephants desperately coming to drink milk is quite fun to watch but goes very very quick! I remove one star from my review as I think they really should create a campsite around the area (for self campers). It could be something connected to Samburu community in order to benefit them and to allow tourists to know a bit more about their culture. I really recommend this Sanctuary! It is NOT a tourist trap like we can find in other countries."

"Reteti is the most amazing place on earth! Naomi is a ROCK STAR and gets so much respect. Everyone there is doing amazing work. Yes it is hard to get there but that is important to its survival! I would travel twice as long and twice as far if that was necessary to visit and support the critical work Reteti is doing! Thanks to Naomi and all the staff for hosting our small group. We will continue to support you all from Philadelphia!"

The Heart of Reteti: Conservation and Community

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is more than just a place to see elephants; it's a powerful example of community-led conservation. Established in 2009, it was born out of the need to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned and distressed elephants in the remote Samburu region of Northern Kenya. The sanctuary is run by the Samburu people, who have a deep connection to the land and its wildlife. This local ownership is key to its success and sustainability. TikTok

Beyond the direct care of elephants, Reteti is intrinsically linked to the well-being of the surrounding community. Initiatives like 'Milk to Mamas' allow local women to sell excess milk from their goats and camels to feed the elephants, providing a vital source of income and fostering a sense of shared responsibility. This integrated approach ensures that conservation efforts benefit the people who live alongside wildlife, creating a more harmonious coexistence. Reddit

Visitors to Reteti are not just tourists; they become supporters of this critical work. The fees and donations directly fund the sanctuary's operations, from the specialized milk formula for the calves to the salaries of the dedicated keepers. It's an opportunity to witness firsthand the positive impact of ethical wildlife tourism and to contribute to the preservation of these magnificent creatures and their habitat. TikTok

A Day at the Sanctuary: What to Expect

A visit to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is a unique and moving experience, centered around the daily routines of the rescued elephants and their devoted keepers. The highlight for many is the morning feeding session, where the young elephants eagerly gather to drink their specialized milk formula, often accompanied by playful interactions. This is a truly heartwarming sight, showcasing the progress and care each elephant receives. TikTok+1

Beyond the direct encounters, Reteti provides ample opportunities to learn about conservation. Informative displays and discussions with staff can deepen your understanding of the challenges facing elephants in Northern Kenya and the innovative solutions Reteti employs. Navigating the Journey to Reteti

Reaching Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is an adventure in itself, often described as challenging but incredibly rewarding. The sanctuary is situated in a remote area of Samburu, and the roads can be rough and sandy. Many visitors recommend using a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the terrain, as standard vehicles may struggle, especially during the rainy season. Reddit

It's common for visitors to arrange transport through their accommodation or a local tour operator who is familiar with the routes. This not only ensures a smoother journey but also allows you to focus on the stunning Samburu landscapes you'll pass through. Be prepared for a bumpy ride, but know that the destination is well worth the effort. Reddit

While the journey might test your patience, it also serves as a natural filter, helping to preserve the sanctuary's peaceful environment and ensuring that visitors are truly committed to supporting its mission. The remoteness is, in many ways, a protective factor for the elephants and the community. Reddit
