"Going to the castle, you will pass by the hill, on which one of the oldest preserved wooden churches in the country is located. We examined it after visiting the castle. It is said that several churches existed on the hill in succession in the period from the 13th century to the 18th century. This one was built in 1750. It was mainly restored in 2010, as the restorers tried to use the knowledge and technologies of antiquity. Birch bark was used for insulation, and the color of the facade was achieved by using rye flour, so that today we can see the church in the most authentic version possible, as it was when it was built. The church stands out brightly against the green grass. The interior is clean, but there are many interesting photos and materials in several languages about the history of the temple and the settlement. A small garden has been created around the church. There was once a cemetery around it, but there are no preserved gravestones, only the grave and the slab of Maya Graifa are preserved, and a legend arose about her life - the Rose of Turaida. The legend is based on documents published in 1848 by Magnus von Wolferd about the murder in the Gutmanis cave on 6.08.1620. You will see a corner with roses, there are also benches, it is cozy and quiet."
