What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the A-Ma Statue for its impressive scale and the breathtaking panoramic views it offers from Coloane Peak. Many appreciate the peaceful ambiance and the opportunity for a scenic hike. Some note that transport options might require planning, and it can get busy during peak times.
"One of the interesting things to see at the Coloane Peak (170 metres above sea level) is the Statue of the Goddess A-Ma (also called Mazu). This monument is supposedly the highest A-Ma statue in the world. It was created by 120 sculptors making use of white jade from Fangshang in Beijing. The monument was inaugurated in October 1998.
The statue height of 19.99 metres symbolises the year (1999) when Macau was reunited with mainland China as part of the handover from Portugal. There are information panels on the ground in front of A-Ma (Goddess of the Sea), describing the important role she plays in the lives of the people of Macau and this region of the world.
What you see is a white figure of A-Ma standing straight, she is robed with decorative headwear and is cradling what appears to be a string instrument in her left arm. A-Ma is facing the north with a gentle yet protective manner, overseeing the people of Macau from this position. In addition to seeing the statue up close, visitors are afforded very good views of Hac-Sa beach to the south, the Cotai Strip and Taipa to the north. On days with good sky conditions, you can also see further to the Macau Peninsula further north.
You will find the Statue of A-Ma just past the Cultural Village on Estrada do Alto de Coloane. There are two parking areas near the Cultural Village, you then walk 3-4 minutes to the Peak, where you find a circular area where the goddess statue stands. To reach the Cultural Village and Alto de Coloane car park area, you can hike up the road (allow 20-25 minutes and be ready for some steep climbs), take a taxi or free shuttle to the Cultural Village from the Seac Pai Van Park parking area down below."
