What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gunung Keriang offers a challenging but rewarding climb with spectacular summit views of the surrounding paddy fields. Visitors appreciate the unique limestone formations and the opportunity to purchase local crystals. However, the steep and slippery trail, especially after rain, requires caution and proper footwear, and it's not ideal for very young children.
"Is an amazing place must visit when you go Alor Setar. Is only 17mins from the Alor Setar town. Google map is hard to guide you to the entrance,i ask local people guide me to entrance. Entrance is free.
Jerail hill is 217m from sea level. Is special on her lime stone and cave along the hiking track. I take one hour hiking up and 35 mins going down. Very beautiful top view,a wide area of paddy fireds, golden colour in Aug.
For beginner, is not so difficult, dont be scared by the first meter, it looks steep, but later it will be ok. There is handle and guide metal bar to help you hike up. Just relax and go up slowly, everybody can hike up. Not suitable for kids. I saw the youngest hiker is around 12year old, follow the father.
Ther are crystal sold there, quite cheap, i bought small one with only RM25. Worth to buy. Crystal is from the Jerai hill."

"Just did this today. Let's start with what this is not, it's not a hike, a hike is a long walk with maybe some steps with maybe a steep gradient or two that you can walk.
What this is a 2.8k climb up very steep stone step trail, when I say steps not manmade concrete steps this a climb that has been hacked into the steep jungle cliff side and is very uneven and requires a lot of upper body strength as a lot of the way you will be pulling yourselves up the climb using either metal handles of a guide rail. Yes young people will find it tough but easy as long as they have the right foot wear. But if though trail climbing is your first time be very prepared. It's steep very steep in places, which makes the coming down twice as hard as going up.
If it has rained, like it did the day before I did it then it is very treacherous as the steps are glass smooth, small and very slippery. You need proper footwear, and gloves as you will be using your hands a lot.
With all that in mind and you do make it to the 4th level, the views are spectacular.
One more thing, as I said this is a jungle trek/trail/ climb and as such there are snakes in the trees I saw 2 today curled up over the trail, bright yellow with black stripes and they are poisonous."

The Gunung Keriang Climb: What to Expect
For beginners, the initial meters might look dauntingly steep, but the gradient often becomes more manageable, though still challenging. The key is to go slowly and steadily. Proper footwear is non-negotiable; sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential. This is especially true if you visit after rain, as the stone steps can become incredibly slippery, turning the climb into a hazardous endeavor. Gloves can also be helpful for protecting your hands while using the metal supports.
The reward for this strenuous effort is the spectacular view from the summit. Visitors describe a wide panorama of paddy fields, which turn a beautiful golden color in August, offering a truly breathtaking sight. The unique limestone formations and occasional caves along the track add to the natural wonder of the place. While generally not recommended for very young children, older teens and adults will find it a rewarding and memorable experience.
Navigating and Safety at Gunung Keriang
Safety is a paramount concern, especially regarding the trail conditions and wildlife. After rainfall, the stone steps become extremely slippery, posing a significant risk of falls. Visitors are strongly advised to wear appropriate hiking shoes with excellent grip and to proceed with extreme caution. The presence of snakes, including venomous ones, has been noted along the trail. While they generally avoid humans, it's crucial to be aware of your surroundings, maintain a safe distance, and avoid disturbing them.
Despite the challenges, the climb is made more accessible by the presence of metal handles and guide bars strategically placed along the steeper sections. These provide crucial support for hikers. The best times to visit are typically early mornings to avoid the heat and potential crowds, or late afternoons to enjoy the golden hour light over the landscape. Remember that the climb is strenuous, and while the descent is quicker, it can be equally challenging, especially on wet surfaces.
