What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gunung Irau offers a spectacular and mystical hiking experience through its renowned Mossy Forest, with breathtaking summit views. While challenging due to muddy and tactical trails, it's a highly rewarding adventure. Visitors appreciate the unique natural beauty but note the necessity of booking guides and permits well in advance, and the lack of facilities on the trail.
"Difficulty
Beginner and intermediate level but very tactical hike. It's very muddy, especially during the rainy season. Hiking stick is useless since many roots, but glove is critically needed.
View
Spectacular and magnificent view along the trail to the peak of Mt. Irau. Majestic, mystic, and misty forest that you should add to your wishlist.
If there is a squirrel that comes to you at the peak of Mt Irau, offer him nuts (if you do bring it)
Facilities
There is no proper toilet along the trail. The only proper is at the entrance of Mossy Forest.
A few signage for photos is available.
Duration
It takes us 2 hours to hike until Mini Irau. And 1.5 hours to reach the peak of Mt. Irau.
There is a cut-off time. The guide will make you reach Mini Irau around 11.30 - 12 pm. or before. Or else you need to stop there and return back to the entrance gate.
Fee and permit
If you did it by your own (permit application, mountain guide, rent a jeep/4WD, etc ), it might cost you around RM120/person, but surely not an easy job.
It is challenging to secure your place since limitation hikers by Forestry Department is around 70 hikers/day.
If you use GoGo service, it might cost you RM150-RM180/person. But be careful, make sure it is a trusted GoGo.
Food&Drink
Bring on your own. Energy bar is a must. 1L mineral water is enough since the cold weather only makes you hungrier.
You know your own body. If you need more carbo, then bring more."

"On 11th May 2025, I joined a hiking activities which led by the local Cameron 5 hiking guide to hike gunung irau @ Cameron highland.
During the hike, the guy that led us talk and text with their phone most of the time, when we are struggle to reach certain point due to our height and difficulties, the guide never offered their help, they just stand aside waiting for us to find our way to reach every difficult points, hence, we climb very slowly and cautious , moreover, as we need to focus on the hike to avoid risk and injury, we are unable to check our phone and watch constantly, the guide that following us never pace and remind us , they never mentioned - if we couldn’t reach cp6 on time , they will stop us from pursuing cp7. The RM300 hiking package that we signed up entitled us the journey to Cp10- summit irau. We didn’t know we were slow, so we keep to our pace all the while. Our group has another 33 members, some are my regular hiking friends and they know that my pace is consider average fast, usually the first 5 to reach the summit, hence I can say that , if the guide does pace us from the beginning, I wouldn’t have falling so behind.
Unfortunately, When we reach first peak - cp6 mini irau, the guide stop me and my friend to pursue cp7, claimed that we are late. I was indignant, questioning them how could they never pace us if they knew we might unable to make it on time, they are not volunteer, they charged us for Rm300 for the hike ! They ignored me and said any dissatisfaction could complain to the authorities.
I did not expect this level of service received for the money I spent, the unprofessional and irresponsible behaviour demonstrated by the guides were uncompromising, an embarrassment of all the dedicated guides that I came across in the past 35 years, if the guides didnt learn their lesson this time , the future of Malaysia tourism would be tarnished by people like them, how other tourist would perceive us if they receive the same treatment as i?
I urge all responsible parties to address this. No hiker shall experience what I’ve gone through anymore."

"The view is spectacular. It’s very strange and mystical place but you will enjoy every inch of the journey.
We started hiking at 9.35am, and the cut of time to mini irau around 11.30am. We managed to reach mini irau around 11.20am.
COT for the peak of mount irau is 12.30pm. And you need to reach the pejabat hutan post before 5pm. It’s compulsory to follow the COT or else you need to turn back. I manage to reach the post around 3.30pm.
As the weather is very cold and misty, you will not get so tired easily and less water consumption. Please bring your rations and snacks adequately. And please standby ORS or consume it before start hiking. It may prevent you from getting cramps.
The most important thing is please wear your GLOVES as you might need to hold on to the root as the track quite tactically."
