"Worth visiting this heritage site to catch these prehistoric wall paintings. Being my first time seeing actual prehistoric stuff apart from museums, it an amazing experience for me.
Just a short hike (2km return) and up some steep stairs.
No entrance fee/guide required."

"From the carpark, take the trail on the left towards Gua Tambun. In about 10 minutes you’ll reach a pavilion. Climb the stairs (around 120 steps). At the top, turn right — the painting is on the left. There are no clear signs, and it took us a while to find it because we were looking for a cave (GUA), but the paintings are actually on the rock wall beside the trail 😅. Use lots of insect repellent — very helpful."
Amber Y
"Managed to climb up to the hill. Noticed some paintings on the wall above 10 meters. Not very clear probably fading out due to environment. Not well maintained. Under care of MPI !"

The Significance of Tambun Cave Paintings
Discovered in 1959, the site is located on a limestone hill and features a collection of over 40 drawings. The most prominent is a large depiction of a hunting scene, showcasing the artistic and cultural practices of the time. The preservation of these ancient artworks is crucial for understanding Malaysia's rich prehistory and cultural heritage.
While the site is a treasure trove of historical information, it's important to note that it is not as commercially developed as some other tourist attractions. This means visitors can experience a more authentic and less crowded encounter with history, but also requires a bit more effort to locate and appreciate.
Navigating the Hike and Finding the Art
Finding the actual paintings requires keen observation. They are not located deep within a cave but are etched onto the rock face beside the trail, often at a height. Many visitors initially search for a cave entrance, overlooking the art on the open wall. Looking up and scanning the rock face carefully is key. The area can also be a habitat for insects, making insect repellent a highly recommended item to bring.
Despite the minor challenges, the short trek is considered rewarding by many, offering a sense of discovery and a unique connection to the past. The lack of extensive signage adds to the adventure, making the eventual discovery of the ancient art even more satisfying.
