What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
House of Wheat Chow Kit is celebrated for its breathtaking, cave-like interior that offers a unique and highly photogenic experience. While the ambiance and pastries are consistently praised, the quality of some main dishes and beverages can be inconsistent, leading to mixed culinary reviews. It's a destination where the setting often shines brighter than the food.
"🌙 First Visit Experience
I dropped by this café for the first time after 9pm, and although the kitchen was already closed, I managed to order some pastries and cold drinks. The sausage roll and croissants were tasty and definitely worth recommending! 🥐🌭
The staff were friendly and provided great service, making the visit pleasant even though it was late. I also love that it’s a pet-friendly café 🐾 — outdoor seating only, but it’s a nice spot to relax and enjoy the evening. I’ll be back earlier next time to try more from their menu! ☕✨"

"First of all, the environment was amazing. You can tell they really put effort into the decor, even the toilet.
Food ordered:
Turkish Egg
Easily the weakest dish of the meal. The overall flavor just didn’t come together and it lacked completeness. The yogurt base needs to be reworked. The diced tomatoes and cucumbers on top were refreshing on their own, but when paired with the equally refreshing yogurt, the whole dish ended up tasting flat, with no main flavor to tie it all together. It just felt off
Chili Crab Pasta
Decent but nothing special. The sauce was quite heavy and oily.Satisfying for the first few bites if you’re hungry, but it gets jelak fast 😂
Very Berries Pancake
The sourdough pancake itself was so good and I’m not even a dessert person. I might try the Classic next time because the toppings made it too sweet for my taste, totally my fault for ordering the Very Berries flavor with a light palate. If you love sweets, go for this one. If not, try their savory pancakes. I ended up eating a lot of just the pancake alone, perfectly fluffy with a nice brown edge
Service
Excellent. I asked a few questions about the dishes and the staff explained everything patiently and thoroughly"

"Nice photospot, we didn’t have to wait long to be seated. Ordered chili crab pasta which was decent (taste reminds me of Hainanese chicken rice chili). Smoked salmon sando was a miss for me.
Coffee is decent, and would love to try out their croizza but it’s only available for dinner menu after 6pm."

The Unique 'Cave' Aesthetic
This unique aesthetic isn't just for show; it's a core part of the visitor experience. Many patrons visit specifically for the photo opportunities, with social media content frequently highlighting the various nooks and crannies that offer perfect backdrops. The cave-inspired decor has become a signature element, differentiating House of Wheat from other cafes in Kuala Lumpur and drawing in a crowd eager to capture its charm. It’s a testament to how thoughtful interior design can significantly enhance a dining establishment's appeal and create a memorable visit.
Culinary Delights: Hits and Misses
However, some main dishes have drawn criticism. The Chili Crab Pasta is described as decent but can be oily and heavy, leading to it becoming 'jelak' (cloying) quickly. The Turkish Egg has been noted for a lack of cohesive flavor, with the yogurt base needing improvement. Similarly, some sandwiches, like the crab or beef variants, have been reported as greasy or lacking in fresh flavor. Even the coffee has received a negative review, with one patron finding the black Americano to be quite poor. This suggests that while the cafe excels in its baked goods and ambiance, the culinary execution of some savory dishes and beverages can be inconsistent.
Pet-Friendly Policies and Practicalities
Despite the welcoming environment for pets, visitors should be aware of practical considerations. Parking in the Chow Kit area is notoriously difficult, and it's often recommended to opt for ride-sharing services like Grab to avoid the stress of finding a spot. Additionally, while the cafe has extended operating hours on weekends, the kitchen may close earlier. It's advisable to confirm kitchen timings if you plan to visit late in the evening, as you might only be able to order pastries and drinks after the main kitchen operations have ceased.
