What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the potential for magical encounters with the elusive Irrawaddy dolphins in this serene protected area. The peaceful waters offer a great backdrop for observation, though sightings are dependent on luck and calm weather. A significant concern is the disruptive impact of jet skis, with many hoping for better regulations to protect the endangered species.
"Great spot for Proboscis Monkeys and Irrawaddy Dolphins...👌😁🥰"

"Most boat trips to nearby islands may stop and linger around this area where the currents are slow and the water peaceful and chance upon the glimpse of the elusive Irrawaddy Dolphins. When we approached here, the skipper cut the engine and we just waited and more than once a while, we can see dolphins just breaking the surface of the water. It is a good photography area as well, but will need a longer range lens to catch photos of the dolphins. Also, during our time, unfortunately some people with jet skis have to create a nuisance in the area and possibly scared away the dolphins, and personally, jet skis should be banned from this area. Still, a 5-star place to visit when going to the islands."

"Tip: It is not recommended to come during the rainy season because the wind and waves will be very strong and it will be harder to see the dolphins.
The River dolphin, also known as the short-beaked dolphin, is a dolphin that can adapt to freshwater. It lives in estuaries, estuaries or shallow coastal areas. Its iconic features are its blunt head and unprotruding mouth~
It is called the "three-second dolphin" by the locals, because it does not jump out of the water for more than three seconds, so not only do you need luck to see them, but you also need to test your "eye speed"~
The captain shared a little secret about dolphins with us. Dolphins often appear near small fishing boats because they can steal food when fishermen are fishing, haha~"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Access is typically via boat tours from nearby coastal towns or islands. Many island-hopping tours in Sarawak, like those to Satang Island, include dolphin watching as part of the itinerary. It's best to arrange a boat trip with a local operator who knows the best spots and times for sightings.
Singu itself is a town in Myanmar, but the Irrawaddy dolphins are also found in other regions like Sarawak, Malaysia. If you're referring to Sarawak, you'd typically travel to Kuching and then arrange boat tours from there.
Public transport directly to the specific dolphin viewing spots is unlikely. Boat tours are the primary method of access, so booking a guided tour is recommended.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Entry to the protected area itself might not require a specific ticket, but you will need to pay for a boat tour. Tour prices vary depending on the duration and inclusions.
Dolphin watching tours are usually flexible and depend on weather conditions and the best times for sightings, often early morning or late afternoon. It's best to confirm with your tour operator.
While not always explicitly stated as an entry fee, tour operators often contribute to conservation efforts. It's good practice to choose operators who are environmentally conscious.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
The best times are generally early morning and late afternoon when the dolphins are most active and the water is calmer. Avoid midday when it can be too hot and the dolphins may be less visible.
Tours can range from a few hours to a full day, especially if combined with island hopping or snorkeling. The actual dolphin watching portion depends on how quickly you find them.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, a camera with a zoom lens, and a reusable water bottle. Binoculars can also be helpful.
No, sightings are not guaranteed. Irrawaddy dolphins are elusive, and their appearance depends on various factors like weather and their natural behavior. Patience is key.
They are known for their blunt heads, unprotruding mouths, and their ability to adapt to both brackish and freshwater environments. They are also sometimes called 'three-second dolphins' because they don't stay above water for long.
📸 📸 Photography
A camera with a telephoto lens (200mm or longer) is highly recommended to capture clear shots of the dolphins from the boat. Fast autofocus and good low-light performance are also beneficial.
Try to anticipate where the dolphins will surface. Shoot in bursts to increase your chances of getting a good shot. Be mindful of the sun's glare on the water.
