What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mantanani Islands are praised for their stunning turquoise waters and soft white sand beaches, offering a picturesque tropical escape. However, many visitors note significant litter issues and a decline in the health of the coral reefs, impacting the underwater experience. Despite these drawbacks, the island's natural beauty and potential for water activities continue to attract tourists.
"Beautiful Island if you keep close to the center of island. If you walk 200-300 meters, you'll only have garbage"
Robert Obłój
"The reef is utterly destroyed. Bleaching event in 2024 combined with over-silting from the construction of the Pan Malaysian Hwy have devastated the once beautiful reef around Mantanani Island. Its broken bits of bleached coral cover the ocean floor and beaches. This reef is a wasteland. Very few fish. Nothing. But yet tour companies are still taking people here like cattle in cattle cars. I think most tourists do not know the reef is destroyed. And the so called “guides” and companies out of Kota Kinabalu aren’t mentioning it. It’s a pretty sad scenario. Don’t bother going here unless you have an interest is seeing a dead and dying reef system up close."
Jerry Rodgers
"It is a beautiful island with clear water and white soft sand. Hotels have resources to clean up the rubbish washed up by the tide daily. However it is also a basic fishing village who we respect."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When planning a family trip, opt for packages that clearly outline kid-friendly activities and ensure that meals are suitable for children. Bringing extra snacks and drinks is always a good idea. While the islands offer natural beauty, be prepared for potential litter in some areas and keep a close eye on children. Consider an overnight stay if you want a more relaxed pace, allowing kids ample time to enjoy the beach and sea.
💰 Budget Travelers
While overnight stays offer a more immersive experience, they can be pricier. If you're on a tight budget, focus on the natural beauty of the beaches and the snorkeling opportunities. Bringing your own snacks and water can also help save money on the island. Be aware that prices for activities and food can be higher if purchased à la carte.
💑 Couples
While the islands are beautiful, couples seeking pristine, untouched reefs might need to adjust expectations based on recent reviews. However, the overall ambiance, coupled with activities like snorkeling or simply relaxing by the sea, can still make for a memorable and romantic getaway.

Navigating to Mantanani Islands
It's crucial to book your transport in advance, especially if you're traveling during peak season. Confirm the departure times and meeting points with your chosen tour operator. For those seeking a more independent adventure, you can arrange private transfers, but this will likely be more expensive. The journey itself offers glimpses of Sabah's coastal scenery, adding to the overall travel experience.
Underwater Experience: Hopes and Realities
However, recent observations and reviews suggest a concerning decline in the health of the reefs. Factors such as bleaching events and increased siltation from nearby construction have reportedly devastated parts of the reef system. While some areas may still offer a glimpse of underwater beauty, it's important for visitors to manage their expectations. Divers and snorkelers might encounter broken coral fragments and a less diverse fish population than in previous years. Despite these challenges, many still find the underwater experience rewarding, particularly those interested in observing the resilience of marine ecosystems or trying scuba diving for the first time.
Island Management and Environmental Concerns
Despite these efforts, litter can be an issue, particularly in areas further from the main tourist hubs. This is often attributed to ocean currents carrying waste from other sources, as well as local waste management practices. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of their own waste and to dispose of it properly. The local community, primarily a fishing village, is an integral part of the island's charm, and respecting their way of life is paramount.
