Best islands for beginner diver?
Hello! My husband and I want to stay on an island while in Borneo. We were looking around Mabul and Kapalai but they all seem VERY expensive. I guess the price is so high because the diving is really good. I also heard the islands have a lot of rubbish around them? We however…

KOTA KINABALU STAYS
We're a couple in our mid 30s that like nature and good food :) We come from a country with amazing beaches (Panama), so we're looking for white sand and crystal clear water beaches. We've been to all SE Asia and are now looking into Malaysia for the end of November. We've…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mantanani Islands are praised for their stunning turquoise waters and soft white sand beaches, offering a picturesque tropical escape. However, many visitors note significant litter issues and a decline in the health of the coral reefs, impacting the underwater experience. Despite these drawbacks, the island's natural beauty and potential for water activities continue to attract tourists.
"Beautiful Island if you keep close to the center of island. If you walk 200-300 meters, you'll only have garbage"
Robert Obłój
"The reef is utterly destroyed. Bleaching event in 2024 combined with over-silting from the construction of the Pan Malaysian Hwy have devastated the once beautiful reef around Mantanani Island. Its broken bits of bleached coral cover the ocean floor and beaches. This reef is a wasteland. Very few fish. Nothing. But yet tour companies are still taking people here like cattle in cattle cars. I think most tourists do not know the reef is destroyed. And the so called “guides” and companies out of Kota Kinabalu aren’t mentioning it. It’s a pretty sad scenario. Don’t bother going here unless you have an interest is seeing a dead and dying reef system up close."
Jerry Rodgers
"It is a beautiful island with clear water and white soft sand. Hotels have resources to clean up the rubbish washed up by the tide daily. However it is also a basic fishing village who we respect."
