Planning Your Visit

Secure Your Sipadan Permit Early

Sipadan Island has a strict daily limit on visitors to protect its fragile ecosystem. Permits are essential and often booked months in advance, especially if you're aiming for peak season. Dive operators usually handle permit applications, but confirm this when booking your trip to avoid disappointment.

Advanced Diving Certification Required

Sipadan is a world-class dive destination, but it's exclusively for certified divers with at least an Advanced Open Water certification. The currents can be strong, and the dive sites are deep. If you're not certified, consider getting your certification on nearby Mabul Island before heading to Sipadan.

Reviews Summary

Sipadan Island is a diver's paradise, lauded for its unparalleled marine biodiversity, including massive schools of barracuda and abundant turtles and sharks. Visitors rave about the thrilling underwater encounters and the pristine environment. However, the high permit fees and the requirement for advanced certification are noted drawbacks, along with the fact that only two dives are permitted per day on the island itself.

"Faded a little since 20 years ago but 2 days should allow you to find everything!
Baracuda, shark and turtles, along the ocean in amazing drift dives…"

Andrew Ingle

"Diving here was great, saw a large school of big barracudas, many bumpheads and some sharks. Definitely a must go spot. However, the experience is spoilt by the fact that you need to pay 100 USD only for entrance fee and this is per day and the worst on it is that you are not even allowed to make more than 2 dives there, the third one needs to be done at the ugly and not very interesting neighbour island Mabul. Some other dive spots (I was in Mataking and Timba Timba) were decent for some dives, but not to compare with Sipadan."

Kevin Kienast

"If you are an avid scuba diver, this is the place you have to visit once in a lifetime. Underwater world is still being protected. Wildlife underwater is top class here, sharks, giant bump heads and lots of turtles. My favourite dive site is definitely the turtle cavern."
