Reviews Summary

The Pinnacles Mulu hike is a highly rewarding but extremely challenging adventure. Trekkers praise the unique natural beauty and the immense sense of accomplishment after conquering the steep, demanding climb. However, the trail's difficulty, potential for slippery conditions, and the basic amenities at Camp 5 are frequently mentioned drawbacks.

"A challenging 3 day trip, with day 2 being the ascent to view The Pinnacles. Only 2,4km but very steep and no respite in the incline. The last 400m involved rope and ladder assistance. Day 1 and 3 of the hike is travel by riverboat and a 9km hike through the rainforest to the rustic Camp 5 for the overnight stops. We went with a tour group but you can book directly with Mulu Parks, but a guide is mandatory for the climb."

"It's a tough hike or rather climbed on 4s for a rookie me. Awesome view .Descending is more difficult and much care to be taken. Started 6.00am back camp 5 4.00pm Great satisfaction and emotions flowed out upon reaching camp.
Sadly, no proper first aid box for my cuts and bruises which needed antiseptic cream dressings and cleaning solutions for my wounds Hopefully management will note this serious matter. Tq"

"I booked direct with the park and reserved a spot. I paid on the day of the hike and it cost 485myr which is a reasonably good price for the experience. This does mean however you need to arrange your own food. I brought dehydrated camping meals.

At first I wondered why they were so strict with the hiking requirements and cutoff times. I thought they were just being extra. Why does it matter if I make it to a certain point 30 minutes late? So what if I hike down in the dark?

After having completed the trek I can see why they are so strict on the safety requirements. It's definitely a tough one and whilst there is a trail to follow, it's pretty rough.

If it rains the morning of the hike they will cancel it due to how dangerous it becomes. You have the option of leaving via the longboat and getting a minor refund or staying an extra night in the hope you can hike the following day.

After leaving camp 5 you pretty much immediately start to ascend. Whilst it's only 2.4km it's a tough climb over slippery rocks and leaves, very sharp limestone rocks, branches and fallen trees, tons of roots etc. Even though it did not rain on our hike I had multiple slips, trips and close calls with a twisted ankle, especially coming downhill with no energy left.

The time up took about 2.5hrs in total which is roughly within their expectations. The descent took me 2hrs 15mins which is a pretty fast as it normally takes more time to come down. Some of our group took circa 5hrs to come down. Go at your own pace!

I found the ladder section the easiest personally as that gave you clear and stable points to hold. The section between the half way point and the ladders was the toughest for me personally as that's when the rocks become the dominant terrain, footholds become more tricky and fatigue sets in.

The heat and humidity add an extra challenge and we were sweating buckets pretty much from the start.

I do suggest bringing gloves. I got a few minor cuts and rope burn on my hands when falling or slipping and sticking my hands out or quickly grabbing the ropes.

The descent is brutal on the knees.

The view is not super amazing but for me it was more the challenge of conquering a tough climb."
