Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise South Ari Marine Protected Area for its incredible opportunities to swim with whale sharks and manta rays, calling it a 'must-visit' for ocean enthusiasts. The vibrant underwater world and the park's conservation efforts are highly appreciated. Some note that the reef can be damaged in parts, and currents can be strong, but the sheer abundance of marine life makes it a worthwhile experience.
"Wonderful experience. Swim with whale sharks & manta rays."

"We took a snorkelling tour to this spot which we were told to do by the locals citing the current and boat danger. I think it is slightly over stated and used to sell tours. I have been snorkelling and free diving for a long time and I believe if you are experienced and you are ok with currents, you can swim out. Obviously check the conditions before to ensure it is safe, go with fins as there is a current and an orange signal ballon so that boats in the area can see you.
The reef is pretty damaged but there are loads of fish, we were only there for 30 min and saw 2 reef sharks, a turtle and loads of other large marine wildlife.
Really great spot"

"This stunning park is home to some of the most majestic marine life you'll ever encounter, including manta rays, sharks, and rays.
As you explore the crystal-clear waters, you'll be treated to a colorful and vibrant underwater world. The manta rays, in particular, are a sight to behold as they glide gracefully through the water. And the sharks and rays are equally stunning, with their sleek and elegant forms.
But it's not just the sea creatures that make SAMPa so special. The park itself is a protected area, dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the Maldives' underwater world. So, not only will you have the chance to see some incredible marine life, but you'll also be supporting an important conservation effort.
So, if you're an ocean enthusiast, a visit to the South Ari Marine Park is an absolute must. You'll leave feeling inspired and in awe of the stunning natural beauty of the Maldives."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) is best accessed from islands within the atoll, such as Dhigurah. You can reach these islands via domestic flights or speedboat transfers from Malé International Airport. Many resorts and guesthouses in the area offer organized excursions to SAMPA.
Speedboats are the most common and efficient way to travel between islands in South Ari Atoll. Public ferries are also available but are less frequent and slower. Many tour operators will arrange boat transfers as part of their excursion packages.
SAMPA itself is a marine area, not an island. You'll typically travel to a nearby island like Dhigurah and then join a boat tour that departs from there to explore the protected waters.
Domestic flights to local airports in South Ari Atoll take about 30-45 minutes, followed by a short speedboat ride. Direct speedboat transfers from Malé can take 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the specific island destination.
While possible, it's more practical to stay within South Ari Atoll for easier access to SAMPA. Day trips from distant atolls would involve significant travel time and cost.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Entry to SAMPA itself doesn't typically require a separate ticket. However, you will need to book a boat tour or excursion with a local operator, and the cost of the tour includes access to the protected area and often snorkeling equipment.
Prices vary depending on the tour operator and duration, but expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $150 USD per person for a half-day or full-day excursion. Some tours may have additional conservation fees.
Most tours include boat transport, a guide, snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, fins), and sometimes refreshments. Some may also offer underwater cameras for rent.
It's advisable to book popular excursions, especially during peak season, in advance to secure your spot. However, you can also book tours upon arrival at your guesthouse or through local tour agencies on the islands.
Generally, there are no strict age restrictions for snorkeling tours, but children should be accompanied by an adult and be comfortable in the water. Some operators might have recommendations for younger children.

Focus on capturing their movement and scale. Get low to the water for dynamic shots. Avoid using flash directly on the animals, as it can startle them.
Drone usage is restricted in many parts of the Maldives, especially near resorts and inhabited islands, due to privacy concerns and regulations. Always check local rules before flying.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When choosing a tour, look for operators that emphasize safety and have experience with younger guests. Shorter excursions might be more suitable for very young children. While snorkeling is the primary activity, the boat ride itself can be an adventure. Remember to pack plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and light clothing to protect children from the sun.
🐠 Snorkelers & Divers
While the reef itself may show signs of damage in some areas, the sheer volume of marine life, including sharks and turtles, makes it a rewarding experience. Experienced snorkelers might find opportunities to swim out from certain islands, but always prioritize safety and check conditions. For divers, numerous dive centers offer trips to the best sites within the protected area.

The Majestic Whale Sharks of South Ari
When you embark on an excursion, your guides will use their expertise to locate these animals. It's crucial to remember that these are wild animals in their natural habitat. While sightings are frequent, they are not guaranteed on every single trip. This is why many seasoned travelers and locals recommend booking multiple excursions if your goal is to swim with a whale shark. Patience and respect for their space are key to a memorable and ethical encounter.
Ethical viewing practices are paramount. This means maintaining a safe distance, never touching or chasing the whale sharks, and ensuring your boat operates responsibly. The goal is to observe them without causing stress or altering their natural behavior. The conservation of these animals is a shared responsibility, and responsible tourism plays a vital role in their continued presence in SAMPA.
