"This is definitely our highlight of the holiday! Especially if you're staying in Valletta this is simply a must see as it is a free attraction and absolutely breathtaking, it is so pretty and well kept however does get busy at Saluting Battery. There is a cafe at the top which is good for snacks and drinks and there are a lot of seats available. We visited end of May and it was getting quite busy and the weather was very hot in the day time so maybe give it a visit early to avoid crowds but it is stunning!"

The Grand Harbour Views

The Upper Barrakka Gardens are renowned for their spectacular, unobstructed views of the Grand Harbour. This natural harbor is one of the deepest in the world and has played a pivotal role in Malta's history, serving as a strategic naval base for centuries. From the gardens' main terrace, you can gaze across the water to the historic Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua), the breakwater, and the bustling port activity. The panoramic vista is particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset, when the light casts a warm glow over the ancient fortifications and the sea. Many visitors find this view to be the absolute highlight of their trip to Valletta. Reddit+1

To truly appreciate the scale and history of the harbor, consider taking a boat tour that departs from the Valletta waterfront. These tours often provide commentary on the historical significance of the fortifications and the naval battles that took place here. The perspective from the water offers a different, yet equally impressive, appreciation of the Grand Harbour's grandeur. Reddit The visual impact of these views is so profound that it's often cited as a reason for repeat visits to Malta. Reddit

Pro Tip: For the best photographic opportunities, aim for the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon. The soft light enhances the colors of the water and the stone architecture, creating truly memorable images. Reddit

The Saluting Battery Experience

A significant draw for visitors to the Upper Barrakka Gardens is the Saluting Battery, located directly below the gardens. This historic artillery battery has been in continuous use since the Knights of St. John. Every day at noon and 4 PM (with the exception of Sundays), a ceremonial firing of the cannons takes place, reenacting a tradition that dates back centuries. The sound of the cannons echoing across the harbor is a powerful reminder of Malta's military past. Reddit

Visitors can watch the ceremony from the gardens above, or for a closer experience, they can purchase tickets to be at the battery level. The latter offers a more immersive perspective, allowing you to see the gunners in action and learn more about the history of the battery. It’s a popular event, so arriving a little early is recommended to secure a good viewing spot, especially for the noon firing. Reddit The ceremony is a must-see for history buffs and anyone interested in experiencing a piece of living history. Reddit

Important Note: The cannon firing ceremony does not take place on Sundays. If this is a key part of your visit, plan your itinerary accordingly. Reddit
