What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Cittadella Victoria for its magnificent panoramic views, especially at sunset, and its rich historical significance. The well-preserved architecture and the opportunity to explore ancient streets and museums are highly valued. Some note that navigating the complex layout can be tricky, and certain areas might not be ideal for those with a fear of heights.
"The Cittadella, often called the Citadel, to be the magnificent, fortified crown jewel perched high above Gozo's capital, Victoria. This ancient city offers one of the most essential cultural experiences in the Maltese archipelago, and I would say a visit here is mandatory for any traveler to Gozo.
Its primary draw, however, is the incredible 360-degree panoramic view. I had the privilege of walking the ramparts at night, which truly enhanced the whole experience. From up there, I could effortlessly trace the sparkling lights of the entire island, taking in the dark rural valleys and scattered villages, feeling a real sense of fun and awe as the Mediterranean Sea stretched out into the distance. The photo opportunities, even after dark, were unparalleled, and the view alone justified the journey up.
Historically, walking its narrow, limestone-lined streets immediately transported me back centuries. Inside the formidable walls, I explored the stunning Baroque Gozo Cathedral and several excellent small museums (like the Gozo Museum of Archaeology). While much of the city has undergone significant restoration, giving it a somewhat pristine and modern feel in places, the vast scale and the rich historical narrative remain firmly intact. It's a beautifully preserved monument that perfectly encapsulates Gozo’s spirit and offers a fantastic blend of history, architecture, and unparalleled scenic beauty, truly making it the undeniable heart of Gozo."

"Visited on a sunny afternoon and it’s easily one of the most striking spots in Gozo. The views from the top are panoramic—rolling hills, rooftops, and sea in the distance. The restored stonework and winding paths give it a timeless feel, but it’s also well-maintained and easy to explore. Not crowded when we went, which made it feel even more special. Great for a slow wander, a few photos, and soaking up the history without the usual tourist rush. Definitely worth the climb."

"Beautiful Cittadella, free to enter and walk around. Try and avoid the middle, these streets were designed to be complicated and difficult to find your way out. Best to walk up the street on the left hand side of the church, walk along the side of the church to the far wall then up the stairs onto the ramparts, this will bring you back around to the clock tower at the front entrance. You will get plenty of photos up there. Not for those who don't like heights."
