What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Blue Grotto for its breathtaking natural beauty and the magical blue hues created by sunlight reflecting off the water. The boat tour is considered a great value for money, offering a memorable experience exploring the sea caves. While the tour is relatively short, the frequent departures and minimal wait times make it an efficient excursion.
"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Your chariot to aquatic wonderland awaits! 🚤
Let's be honest - this is peak tourist territory and everyone knows it, but sometimes the touristy stuff exists because it's actually brilliant. Blue Grotto Boat Service delivers exactly what's written on the tin: a proper boat ride to some of the most stunning sea caves you'll ever clap eyes on! 🌊
The crew knows these waters like the back of their weathered hands, and they're surprisingly good sports about the whole "ferry loads of gawking tourists around" business. Fair pricing too - no sneaky extras or "surprise charges" that make your wallet weep. They'll take you to the famous Blue Grotto (obviously) plus a cheeky tour of other caves that are equally gorgeous but get less Instagram fame. 📸
Now, about that seasickness warning - they're not kidding around! If you're the type who gets queasy watching washing machines spin, maybe pop a travel sickness tablet beforehand. The boats bob about like enthusiastic cork screws, especially near the cave entrances. But honestly, if your stomach can handle it, this is absolutely worth doing. 💊
The commentary is decent (not award-winning, but informative), and they give you enough time at each spot to properly soak it all in. Book ahead during peak season unless you fancy standing around looking hopeful! ⏰"

"If you visit Malta, this is one thing that you must do!
Bring $10 cash for each person, shoes and clothes to go on a small fishing boat. A $2 cash tip per person. A water proof bag. I also recommend bringing a swim suit and towel so you go swimming off the rocks and cove next to where the boat launch. They have a ton of nice little restaurants in the village to grab a snack. Although the little village has a very small parking lot, I recommend taking bolt or the bus to make it easier. This boat ride is an absolute must do during your visit. To avoid the crowds and heat you should arrive in the morning"

"The line moves quickly, it’s worth it! You buy tickets from the booth once you work your way down - have someone in your party leave the line to get the tickets so you are ready when you get down to the boats. There’s golf carts to get back up the hill for 1.50€. Beautiful little excursion to see the caves, it’s about 20 minutes for the tour."

📸 📸 Photography
The morning hours, especially before noon, are ideal for photography as the sunlight creates the most dramatic and vibrant blue reflections within the caves.
Given the varying light conditions inside the caves and the bright sunlight outside, using a camera with good low-light performance or adjusting ISO and aperture accordingly is recommended. A polarizing filter can help reduce glare on the water.
Drone usage is generally restricted in protected natural areas and near tourist attractions to ensure safety and preserve the environment. It's best to check local regulations before flying a drone.
The entrance to the caves, the interior of the caves with their luminous water, and the panoramic views of the coastline from the cliffs are all highly photogenic.
While the water is exceptionally clear, the boat tours do not typically allow for extensive underwater photography due to the nature of the tour. However, if you have the opportunity to swim or snorkel in the vicinity, underwater shots would be stunning.

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
It's advisable to visit in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day and potentially larger crowds. Ensure children are supervised closely on the boats, and consider bringing snacks and drinks, as options at the immediate departure point might be limited. The scenic views and the unique boat ride make it a memorable experience for all ages.
💰 Budget Travelers
Pack your own snacks and water to save on costs at the cafes near the viewpoint. While there are restaurants, opting for a picnic with a view or eating in a less touristy area can further stretch your budget. The golf cart ride up the hill is also a small, worthwhile expense.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Bring a camera with good low-light capabilities or a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive cave interiors and coastal landscapes. A polarizing filter can enhance the blues and reduce glare. Be prepared for the movement of the boat, and consider a camera strap for security.
