Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views of Ramla Bay from Calypso Cave's viewpoint. While the cave itself is closed, the free access to stunning scenery and the option to hike down to the beach are major highlights. Some note that other nearby caves might offer more picturesque, accessible views.

"Nice view but...

...the caves across the valley are much more picturesque (and free as well). The Calypso Caves are closed for entering and even the premium viewing deck was closed when I visited. Don't get me wrong, it is nice (and free) but save yourself some time and effort and go across the valley for a better view from caves that you can enter."

"The view is nice but there are better looking places just around the corner. The cave itself is closed as far as I can tell, it's the view from above"

"Nice place with great view of Ramla Bay. You can park for free, as everywhere in Gozo, and it's only a two minute walk to the viewpoint. Unfortunately the cave itself is closed, due to damages. It's also a great place to check if Ramla Beach is too crowded 😂🙂 If you like a little hike, you can walk down to the beach from here. The landscape and the valley are beautiful."

The Legend of Calypso and Odysseus

Calypso Cave is steeped in ancient mythology, famously mentioned in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. According to the legend, the beautiful nymph Calypso kept the Greek hero Odysseus captive on her island, Ogygia, for seven years. She fell in love with him and offered him immortality if he stayed, but Odysseus longed to return home to his wife Penelope. The cave is believed to be the very spot where this mythical encounter took place, adding a layer of romantic and adventurous history to the stunning natural landscape. Instagram+1

While there's no archaeological proof, the tradition of identifying this location with Homer's Ogygia has persisted since the 16th century. Visitors can stand at the viewpoint and imagine the dramatic scenes described in the epic poem, with the vast Mediterranean Sea stretching out before them, mirroring Odysseus's longing for the sea. This connection to ancient literature makes Calypso Cave more than just a scenic spot; it's a portal to a timeless story. Instagram
