What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the breathtaking summit views and the immersive natural beauty of the Black River National Park. However, many caution that the hike is significantly more challenging than often described, with steep, slippery trails and a difficult final ascent. Proper footwear and rain gear are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
"Went to the summit 2 months ago from Plaine Champagne. It was in winter, but fortunately had a sunny weather. I found the track technical since I am a beginner trailer and going uphill was not that easy. I did wear trail shoes that day, and it was slippery and humid in some places. My shoes helped me a lot. The whole trail from Plaine Champagne and back took me nearly 2 hours."

"Nice hiking area. The trail start at B103 plain champagne road. At some area, it is slippery. On the summit you will get a nice view of le morne brabant, tourelle de tamarin and the west coast"

"I can't leave an awesome hike like this a bad review. It was amazing!
HOWEVER ... This is NOT an easy trail. A big Mauritian hiking website claims this is an easy trail.
That is absurd. We took our son on this trail today. We adopted him last year and we're trying to share our love of hiking. We've hiked all over the world; my wife and I love difficult trails.
But today we were constantly going up and down steep inclines. It was raining nonstop, so we were walking in ankle-deep mud the whole time. The route MIGHT be 4 miles, but it's a hard four miles and will take you a few hours.
The last 20 minutes before you reach the summit you'll be going up sheer vertical inclines, using a rope to pull yourself to the top. Our son fell and injured himself several times. He's a tough futball player (not a weakling), but because of this experience I doubt we'll be able to bring him on a hike again anytime soon.
He says he hates hiking now, and all we wanted to do was share this with him.
Come prepared. Bring rain gear (it rained all day even though the weather forecast said it wouldn't). Bring good shoes. We saw pieces of shoes ALL OVER the trail—a testament to how rocky the path is the whole way!"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
If you do decide to go, ensure children wear appropriate footwear with excellent grip and bring plenty of snacks and water. Consider hiring a guide who can manage the pace and ensure safety, especially during the final rope-assisted ascent. For a less strenuous nature experience with kids, exploring other parts of the Black River National Park or opting for shorter, flatter trails might be more suitable.
🚶♀️ Seniors and Less Active Travelers
For those who still wish to experience the beauty of the Black River region without the strenuous hike, consider visiting viewpoints accessible by car, such as the Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) or other scenic spots within the national park. These locations offer stunning natural beauty and cultural significance with minimal physical demand.
⛰️ Experienced Hikers & Adventure Seekers
Consider tackling the hike during different weather conditions to experience its varied moods. Exploring the surrounding trails within the Black River National Park can also provide extended adventure opportunities. Don't forget to pack essentials like a first-aid kit, ample water, and a reliable navigation tool.

Navigating the Trail: What to Expect
The final approach to the summit involves sheer vertical inclines where ropes are provided to assist climbers. This section can be particularly tricky, especially on the descent, where grip on the ropes might be compromised. Proper footwear with excellent grip is not just recommended; it's vital to prevent slips and injuries.
Many hikers recommend wearing trail shoes with robust soles. The trail winds through dense forest, offering a beautiful natural setting, but the ruggedness of the path is a consistent theme in reviews. Being prepared for a strenuous workout is key to enjoying this rewarding climb.
The Summit Experience and Views
However, the visibility of these stunning vistas is highly dependent on the weather. Misty and cloudy conditions, common in the Black River mountain range, can significantly obscure the views. Many visitors advise checking the weather forecast and aiming for a sunny day to maximize the visual experience.
Even with less-than-perfect weather, the feeling of accomplishment and the immersion in the natural beauty of the surrounding forest make the climb worthwhile. The summit area itself is a great spot to rest, take photos, and soak in the unique atmosphere of being on the island's highest peak.
Guided Tours vs. Independent Hiking
For those who prefer a more structured and informative adventure, guided tours are readily available. Companies like Yana Nature Mauritius are frequently mentioned, offering expertise and ensuring a safe, enjoyable trek. These tours often cater to various fitness levels and can be booked in advance, which is advisable during peak seasons.
Choosing to go with a guide can alleviate concerns about navigation, especially if you're not an experienced hiker. They can also help you spot wildlife and understand the ecological significance of the Black River National Park. For families or those seeking a deeper connection with the Mauritian landscape, a guided hike is a highly recommended option.
