What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Tren Maya is a modern and comfortable transport option for exploring Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, praised for its punctuality and clean, well-maintained trains. While some stations are still under development and transfers can require extra planning, the overall experience is positive, especially in Premier Class. Potential issues include occasional disorganization and limited onboard amenities beyond snacks.
"I arrived at the Cancun station by train and needed to get to the airport. On my way to the exit from the platform, I stopped at the restroom and, to my dismay, saw the shuttle that was scheduled to leave in 15 minutes depart right in front of me. The next shuttle wouldn't arrive for another hour!
The ticket kiosk attendant was quite unhelpful; he mumbled that the next bus would be in one hour and 20 minutes and pressured us to take a taxi instead, the taxi service asked for 500 pesos for the ride to the airport. Since the schedule indicated a 50-minute wait, we decided to wait for the bus. Fortunately, the next one arrived in just 25 minutes, before the arrival of the next train.
I suspect that the bus employees, despite being part of the official Tren Maya service, might be engaging in some questionable practices—like leaving before the scheduled time to assist taxi drivers in getting customers. Unfortunately, there is no way to use Uber from the train station, as the authorities do not allow rideshare companies there. The next bus arrived without any signage indicating its destination, which could leave many passengers unaware of this service.
The price of a bus ticket is 35 pesos, and it must be paid to the kiosk attendant."

"I took Tren Maya from Cancún Airport to Mérida in early February 2025. Booking a ticket online was straightforward.
At the time of my trip, the only shop available at the Cancún Airport station was the Tren Maya gift/souvenir shop; it didn't sell snacks or beverages. There were no cafés onsite to buy food but there was a beverage vending machine.
The onboard cafe had typical snack, beverage and grab'n'go items available during my trip. During my trip Wifi was not available. The train cars are clean, modern and comfortable. Overall, it's a great transport option for travel to different parts of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Chiapas."

"This place is still being built as of Late Sept 2025, the smell of fresh concrete in the air (actually very nice), many bathrooms are closed (not nice waiting over 10 minutes for a stall that is never available), workers installing roof panels, a sizeable leak in a roof partition makes me question if they know about rain gutters. NO digital display of any line information inside the station, instead a guy with a bullhorn shouting line information and well over-worked. The train itself did not display upcoming or current stops (best take a picture of the map and pay attention) and they got my seat info confused and gave me someone else's ticket stub in confusion. I had to pick up all my stuff and move to another cart after showing my ID and ticket 5 times already. Disorganization was the name of the game, but still an ok option if you're organized and travel lightly."

Despite these potential hiccups, many travelers find the Tren Maya to be a reliable and enjoyable mode of transport. Being organized, traveling light, and staying aware of schedules and station procedures can help mitigate any inconveniences.
